In the 1950s, the Cleveland Indians started using “Chief Wahoo” as their team mascot. Chief Wahoo was drawn along ethnic stereotypes like a feather in his hair and red skin. The professional baseball team came under fire for several years for refusing to depart with the cartoon. Supporters of the cartoon argued that the character was not only harmless but also a piece of the city’s heritage. We wondered how America would feel if the tables were turned.
So, Chief Yahoo was born. A parody of the Indians’ mascot featuring white American tropes, like a blade of wheat instead of a feather.
In 2018, MLB and the Indians announced that Chief Wahoo would no longer be used on uniforms or stadium signs and the MLB website planned to stop selling Chief Wahoo merchandise.
In 2021, the Cleveland Indians officially changed their name to the Cleveland Guardians.
