ALOHOMORA THE DRIP :: What to Wear in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

ALOHOMORA THE DRIP :: What to Wear in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Like hopeful hypebeasts lining up for the latest drops on Fairfax, students getting ready for their next term at Hogwarts visit Diagon Alley to “Alohomora” the drip. Tucked away behind the Leaky Cauldron, the magic world’s shopping mecca is only accessible to wand-wielding witches and wizards who tap the correct brick in the courtyard wall, three up and two across from the trash can.

While we may remember Harry Potter and his gang of evil-fighting friends primarily rocking their dress robes and ties, formal wizardwear wasn’t always the most versatile attire for battling the dark arts. No, the wizarding world has streetwear, too. Throughout the entire series, we regularly see students and teachers alike getting off tremendous looks, even in the most stressful and dangerous of times. Throwing fits in the face of adversity, that’s the mark of a well-dressed wizard.

Each character in the Harry Potter universe has their own unique style and taste level, with some pulling off iconic looks with ease while others try much harder to turn heads. I’m looking at you, Gilderoy Lockhart.

When designing pieces for The Hundreds X Harry Potter collection, our team imagined what streetwear might look like in that world. What would the cool kids wear at Hogwarts? Did different style trends take hold in each of the four houses? Just how was Hagrid able to afford so much custom Carhartt on a groundskeeper’s salary? From Ron’s disheveled-yet-daring fits and Harry’s basic essential hoodies to Hermione’s expert layering, we looked at all of the elements of a great wizard’s wardrobe.

But we couldn’t just focus on the main characters. There are four separate houses at Hogwarts, not to mention a slew of stylish professors, all with their own unique personalities and design elements. As the great Albus Dumbledore once said, “It is our choices, Harry, that show us who we truly are, far more than our abilities.” Never a truer word has been spoken.

Just look at Ron Weasley. The youngest of three sons and older brother to Ginny, Ron is perpetually caught in a cycle of hand-me-downs, taking only what survives his twin older brothers. But through impeccable choices, Ron’s styling routinely shines. The ginger-haired underdog is a sustainability icon, making the best of what he already has and never popping one new tag unnecessarily.

In almost every film in the franchise, Ron blesses us with impeccable fits. He has the greatest fleece and sweater collection we’ve ever seen, and he knows it. You can tell because he sometimes wears two of them at once, possibly to avoid having them jacked by his younger sister when he isn’t looking. Weasley is the most unintentionally cool character in the entire series, falling out of bed with a monster fit on almost daily.

Harry, on the other hand, isn’t quite as consistent. And it just goes to show you that all the money in the world can’t buy you great taste–even if it can buy you all the snacks from the trolley on the Hogwarts Express. And listen, it’s understandable. Harry has a lot on his mind, including saving both worlds from destruction, leading his Quidditch team to victory, and loads of generational trauma that he has to relive constantly through magic mirrors and water bowls.

But Harry’s style isn’t all bad, and he actually does pretty well when not trying too hard, compiling some clean and classic hoodie and jean ensembles. However, his sneaker game is atrocious and usually distracts the eye from some of his better offerings. The Chosen One does manage to flex his fit muscles here and there, though admittedly, some of his best sweaters were gifts from the Weasleys so…

You have to imagine that Harry would have benefitted greatly from getting to spend more time with his Godfather, the timelessly dashing Sirius Black.

Hermione is nothing if not prepared, and that includes being ready for any weather. Her attention to detail is impeccable and at any given time, she’s wearing enough layers to make three separate fits—perfect for getting unexpectedly trapped in the Chamber of Secrets or the Shrieking Shack for extended stays.

Granger can go from American Eagle model to ballroom glamour with ease and occasionally steals the scene from Ron and Harry with her pastel pinks and purples. Hermione’s vast collection of wool knits rivals Ron’s and probably explains why they fell in love. A cozy queen and her sweatered soulmate.

That brings us to the best-dressed character in all the wizarding world, my guy Rubeus. Hagrid is the most effortlessly drippy giant in the game, the grungy goat of the Big & Tall fashion scene. The fact that he likely needs to source his gear in like 27XL makes it all the more impressive that Hagrid consistently blows everyone else out of the water with his fits. And you know he’s the most comfortable. You can’t wrangle dragons in Dior and you can’t break Buckbeak in some Balenciaga. No, Hagrid is a Carhartt and Dickies guy, a true workwear hero.

As you zoom out a bit and look at the four houses of Hogwarts, you start to see some underlying trends. Gryffindors tend to lean more to the preppy, jock side of the style spectrum, while Slytherins encompass more of the goth and punk scenes. Then you have Draco Malfoy, who starts rocking all-black suits to school the second he joins the dark side. Such a little poser. Chill out, Machine Gun Malfoy.

The Hundreds X Harry Potter collection explored those house dynamics and brings something to the table for everyone, no matter where the Sorting Hat sends you.

We have pep rally gear for all four houses, and even recruited our deeply disturbed friend Mark Riddick to reimagine He Who Must Not Be Named as a metal band. Can you imagine a V*ldemort and the Death Eaters show? Sssssimply ssssssinissster.

If the styling of the Harry Potter films taught us anything, it’s that your fits have to be just as functional as they are fashionable. You have to be ready for anything, from a random Dementor attack to a messy mishap in Potions class. And you’re going to be at Hogwarts for months at a time, so you need to plan accordingly. You can’t just hit Diagon Alley every day, so you must pack your trunk for all possible scenarios before the Spring term begins after the holiday.

But don’t worry, The Hundreds has your back. The Harry Potter collection has everything you’ll need to pass your OWLs and defeat the Dark Lord, from Graphic T-shirts and Pullover Hoodies to Coaches Jackets perfect for the Quidditch pitch and a Leatherbound Notebook to write down all the new spells you’re going to learn.

And remember, nobody ever has to see you in your worst fit if you have an invisibility cloak.
