TOP 5 :: Hello Kitty Collaborations

TOP 5 :: Hello Kitty Collaborations

Superfan or not, everyone has come across the charming and adorable Hello Kitty at some point in their life. Conceptualized in 1974, Hello Kitty quickly became a staple in Japanese pop culture, where there’s currently a Sanrio theme park and an entire Hello Kitty town. Two years later, she was introduced to the Western Hemisphere and became an instant global phenomenon. Countless manga, anime, and cartoon shows have been developed around the little girl commonly mistaken for an actual cat, certifying Hello Kitty as a household name. Nearly 50 years later, we’ve seen every type of official Hello Kitty product from fashion accessories to literal tires. Hello Kitty’s success has been grand but all of this spotlight was too much for one girl to handle. So, in 1975, Sanrio’s My Melody was introduced and we’ve seen Hello Kitty’s friend list grow immensely ever since.

Hello Kitty continues to serve as a global pop culture icon with a long line of suitors waiting their turn for a collaboration with the adorable characters of Sanrio – including The Hundreds. We’ve joined forces with the always admirable Sanrio crew for a 33 piece collection, marking this one of the biggest collaborations in the history of The Hundreds. The collab will include a piece for every kind of Sanrio fan, including an extremely limited Coaches Jacket made from 100 percent genuine leather, satin lining, and various Sanrio characters embroidered all over the jacket. The collection will also include a big line of accessories that we absolutely can’t wait to add to our own collections. In celebration of the The Hundreds X Sanrio release, we’re acknowledging the Top 5 collabs all-time with the loveable Sanrio characters, in no particular order.

Cup Noodle X Hello Kitty
Just a couple of months ago, two household names came together for a long-overdue collaboration. Sanrio’s Hello Kitty and Gudetama joined everyone’s favorite instant ramen, Cup Noodle and Top Ramen, for a genius limited edition collaboration. Unfortunately, the collaboration did not come with Hello Kitty and Gudetama instant ramen but we did enjoy the capsule just the same. A fitting pink for the Hello Kitty pieces and Gudetama takes on a flip of Top Ramen packaging for one of the tastiest collabs I’ve ever seen…it’s just making me a little hungry…brb.

Sanrio X EVA Air
In 2005, the Tawainese airline EVA Air joined forces with Sanrio to completely transform two Airbus 330-200s into the most adorable jets to ever fly the friendly skies. The exterior of the jets featured Hello Kitty and her friends, paired with matching interior furnishing and features. The jets were used to servicing Japanese destinations but over time they have been popularized attractions worldwide, and we’ve seen the introduction of more destinations, and more Sanrio jets. As of March 1st, 2020, EVA air has suspended Hello Kitty Jet services due to COVID-19 but we will continue to check EVA Air’s Hello Kitty-themed site for any new revelations.

Sanrio X Reebok Instapump
Sanrio lent their beloved Hello Kitty and Gudetama’s services to Reebok in 2019 to give them the Instapump Fury treatment. The iconic, futuristic sneaker debuted in 1994, and with the recent popularization of the model in Asian countries, it was the perfect trainer to caramelize with the essence of cuteness. You can even see the little characters on the pump and heel of the shoes! The shoe was only released in Japan but you can still cop on StockX if you’re lucky.

Sanrio X Undercover X Medicom Toy
One of the biggest controversies surrounding Hello Kitty (aside from the fact that she’s not a cat) is the character’s lack of…mouth. Her expressionless face was intentionally designed this way by creator Yuko Shimizu because they wanted fans to “project their feelings onto the character.” The unique design choice allows Hello Kitty to receive limitless expressions and gigs, fully granting fans the gift of imagination. Sanrio X Undercover X Medicom Toy took it to the next level by completely removing the character’s face in a limited-edition release back in 2008. The release came with three iterations of the figures, one in black and white, no-face, and a ribbon filled face. Now, how’s that for endless expressions?

Hello Kitty X Nike Air Presto
First released in 2000, the lightweight sneaker was cutified for a legendary collaboration involving the godfather of streetwear Hiroshi Figiwara and the designer of the InstaPump fury (and longtime Hello Kitty fan), Steven Smith. The collaboration came in a drop of three sneakers with an extreme rarity clause: it was only given to friends and family. The shoe isn’t available on StockX and is sold out on GOAT, so your best bet at looking at this beauty of the shoe is this photo below. Please enjoy.
