SNEAKY DEADLEE :: A Deeper Look Inside the Lee Jeans Collab

SNEAKY DEADLEE :: A Deeper Look Inside the Lee Jeans Collab

Last year, The Hundreds collaborated with one of the longest-standing clothing brands in America, Lee Jeans. Slinging denim since 1889, Lee Jeans has established itself as a true piece of Americana, quite literally the fabric of our nation. For the first collection, we looked back into Lee’s history and honed in on Buddy Lee, their mascot from like the 40s or 50s. You know we love a mascot. We brought Buddy into the modern age and gave him a diverse crew of friends and updated their fits so they didn’t feel so old-timey.

Then, we did what we always do. We focused on workwear for the common man. Pieces that stand out but hold up forever. Pieces that will be in your closet decades from now, pieces you can pass on because they get better with age. We really connected with Lee Jeans on that front, making things that last a lifetime — or longer.

Because the process of making denim is such a drain on Mother Nature, we spoke to Lee’s VP and head of global design, Betty Madden, about Lee’s vision for the future of jeans and how they, as one of the largest manufacturers of denim worldwide, could change course and work more sustainably. She also taught us that washing your jeans is a mortal sin and you should instead clean them by putting them in your freezer and scraping the frozen stains off. Wild.

Now, we’re circling our wagons back to Lee Jeans and collaborating with the iconic brand once more. And for this second capsule collection, we wanted to keep things simple, at least on the surface. It’s all about the details, you know?

Blood, Sweat, and Years. One of The Hundreds’ mottos, mantras, slogans, catchphrases, whatever you want to call it. Words to live and die by. We put everything into this, always. And it’s the little things that make the big difference. So look closely and you’ll find something that makes it special.

For this collaboration with Lee Jeans, we created two matching denim sets comprised of Trucker Jackets and relaxed fit, heavyweight denim Jeans. Both feature beautiful co-branded leather badges, buttons, and tags, something understated but timeless. It’s always nice to see the Bar Logo next to another logo so iconic.

The matching Denim Sets are also embroidered with a flower pattern that may look simple at first glance, as we do a lot of hand-drawn floral prints on pieces in collabs and seasonal collections. But if you look a little deeper… CAREFUL, don’t touch it! The flower sewn into both the jacket and pants is a Bloodroot, part of the Poppy family of plants. And it’s dangerous.

A little backstory on Bloodroot, according to Wildflower:

The single bloodroot leaf and flower each rise on a separate stem, and at first the leaf completely enwraps the flower bud. The clear, white, many-petaled blossom may open before the leaf has completely unwrapped, rising slightly above the leaf to a height of 6-10 in. Leaves, which are large, round and deeply cleft, eventually reach a height of 12-14 in. On a smooth stalk a solitary white flower, with a golden-orange center, grows beside a lobed basal leaf that often curls around the stalk. Roots and stem with acrid red-orange juice.

This fragile spring flower develops and rises from the center of its curled leaf, opening in full sun, and closing at night. Like most members of the Poppy family, it lasts for a relatively short time. The red juice from the underground stem was used by Native Americans as a dye for baskets, clothing, and war paint, as well as for insect repellent. The generic name, from the Latin sanguinarius, means “bleeding.”

The red “juice” inside the Bloodroot stems is poisonous and can cause extreme vomiting and loss of consciousness — or worse. Sanguinarine, the toxin within Bloodroot, kills animal cells and destroys skin tissue, causing permanent scarring and disfigurement. AKA don’t mess around with Bloodroot because it will surely leave its mark on you forever.

Better to just pay tribute to this beautiful flower with the embroidered version.
