These days, it’s refreshing to see someone go super-viral on social media and then use their newfound fame and platform for something good. And spreading the word about animal rescue and environmental conservation seems like two of the best ways to use a platform that reaches millions and millions of people every single day. From tossing baby carrots in his backyard to rocking big carots all over the world, Kelvin Peña aka Brother Nature has hit the big time.

What started with feeding some deer hanging around his house, turned into some of the most wholesome content Instagram had seen in years. Just a guy and his best friends, who happen to mostly be wild animals, all just vibing and enjoying the occasional banana life tosses your way.

As Brother Nature’s success grew, he started taking his show on the road, traveling the world to show his fans places and creatures they’ve never seen before. As Peña learns more about new species across the globe and the environmental challenges they face, so do his fans.

The Hundreds is teaming up with Brother Nature to celebrate Earth Day and bring nature back to the city of Los Angeles with some help from our friends at City Plants. We’re releasing an extremely limited edition graphic T-shirt in collaboration with Brother Nature, featuring cartoon versions of the whole gang, including Adam Bomb!

Each T-shirt we made for this project will play a part in changing how streetwear and sustainability intersect. First, the garment itself is made from recycled plastic bottles, making something new with trash instead of tossing it in a landfill. Second, for each The Hundreds X Brother Nature shirt sold, City Plants will plant 100 new trees in Los Angeles. So, by supporting this drop, you’re adding a very special new piece to your collection, reducing waste, and giving our beautiful city a gift that will reap environmental benefits for generations to come.

Every year, City Plants puts over 20,000 new trees in the ground, fighting pollution, reducing energy costs, and giving local wildlife a fighting chance. If you live in LA, you’re eligible to get free delivery of up to seven trees for your yard.
Before we release this T-shirt and plant a whole bunch of new trees, I caught up with Brother Nature to see what he’s been up to recently and where he’s traveling first when the world opens back up.

How are you? What’s new?
Everything is good man, I can’t complain. Happy with my new management and can’t wait to start traveling the world meeting new animals again.
Did nature get to heal a little bit last year with all of the humans on lockdown?
I believe so, especially in all of the places that took lockdown real seriously. I’m sure the plants and the air were happy. [Laughs]

What are you most excited to do now that things are getting a little bit back to normal?
Going back to Africa and doing some real hands-on conservation work.
How do you find out about new animals you want to go meet and learn about?
Honestly, I either do research or just scroll through the Twitter timeline and looking at any cute viral animals that I’d like to meet.
What’s the craziest place you’ve been and what were some of the animals you encountered there?
The craziest place I’ve been was probably Uganda, where I teamed up with the giraffe conservation organization to translocate 15 giraffes to a place where they’d been extinct for over 40 years.

Do you feel any kind of rivalry with other animal accounts on social like Tarzan or Nature Is Metal, or are you just happy so many people want to watch animal content?
Not at all, it’s a blessing to even have a platform to spread love, inspire and help raise awareness for our creatures.
What would you be doing now if you never made friends with Money and Canela?
Probably would be a Doctor or something.
Did way more deer in the neighborhood start coming out once word got out you were passing out food?
[Laughs] Yeah. They definitely came out of the woodwork.

How the hell did you catch Malaria? What was the recovery like? What kind of precautions do you take now when you travel to new places?
I caught Malaria on my Uganda trip. Prior to my flight, I had gotten all my medications last minute, but since it was so short notice the Doctor didn’t have the Malaria pills. But the opportunity was too good for me to miss so I decided to go anyway. I didn’t think I’d actually get sick but them mosquitoes got me.
Where haven’t you been yet that you’d like to go? What kind of animals live there?
I’d like to go to Yamanouchi, Japan, to visit their snow monkeys that live in these hot springs. They just chillin in they lil hot tubs. [Laughs]
Is there any kind of animal you want no part of hanging out with?
Snakes.
I swear I have the worse luck with snakes 😔 pic.twitter.com/5Oz43ffbT3

Tell us about your work with City Plants and how important planting trees is to restoring our ecosystem?
City Plants focuses on planting trees all over LA so I thought it’d be nice to partner with the organization to learn about their mission while getting involved with the community. Trees contribute to our environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife.
How will you celebrate Earth Day?
Looking at new ways to come up with sustainable products to push the eco-friendly mission for my fans, and blasting this shirt on social media to get these trees planted baby let’s go!
