Don’t miss the just-dropped trailer for the upcoming coming-of-age film Dope, set in none other than INGLEWOOOOOOD, California. From what we’ve heard, the movie’s set in the ’90s, starring actor/rapper Shameik Moore as a nerdy high schooler, complete with a hi-top fade, who gets caught in some trouble with the cool kids in an area of Inglewood called “The Bottoms.” Sounds like a day-in-the-life gone bad. Director Rick Famuyiwa (Brown Sugar, The Wood) told Entertainment Weekly that Moore’s character is a “regular kid”: “We’ve seen a lot of films about everything else in these neighborhoods – the crime, the athletes, the gangs – but you don’t see films about the regular kids who have to survive in these streets.” True.
Co-starring is a cast we can’t wait to see: A$AP Rocky, Chanel Iman, Vince Staples, Tyga, Casey Veggies, Zoe Kravitz, Forest Whitaker, and even Diddy’s son Quincy Brown. Dope will feature four tracks written by Pharrell (who also produced the film, alongside Forest Whitaker, and Diddy), which will be performed by the fictional garage band in the film. The film will be premiering this week at Sundance Film Festival.
FUN FACT: If you can spot which The Hundreds collaborative hat from 2014 is in the trailer, you win. What do you win? Nothing but our undying respect. Hint: Remember the film is set in the ’90s.
