ARTIST SERIES BANDANAS :: Jaime Muñoz

ARTIST SERIES BANDANAS :: Jaime Muñoz

Who you are and where are you from?
My name is Jaime Muñoz and I’m from Southern California and currently live and work in Pomona.

How long have you been creating art and how long did it take you to find your artistic voice and style?
I’ve been making art since childhood and continue to develop my art practice. I started out painting in my room as a kid and spent long hours building on my skills daily. It continues to evolve and my aesthetic is fluid, constantly changing.

What inspired this piece featured on the bandana?
The piece, titled “Tension” is about my relationship to religious iconography. A lot of my practice has been exploring these images and the contradictions inherent in Chicano identity.

What gravitated you to this project?
I saw the collaboration that the Hundreds did with a good friend of mine, Greg Ito and really liked how it came out. I was excited when I was approached to collaborate on the artist series bandanas.

What organization/charity are the proceeds going to and why did you choose them?
I want to donate to Roots of South LA, a non-profit aimed at restoring mental health and wellness in the community of South LA. I chose to support them because I believe that access to mental health is really important and I really believe in the work that they are doing in the community.

What would you tell the younger version of yourself, just beginning their artistic journey?
I would tell my younger self to be confident and take more risks.

How will you use this bandana?
I’m going to hang it to display on my altar.
