ROYAL RUMBLES.

ROYAL RUMBLES.

I’m not planning on watching the new Karate Kid movie, or Kung Fu Boy, or whatever it is. I’m an original KK1 diehard – Jackie Chan is hardly a Pat Morita,.. and no Cobra Kai? That’s like Star Wars without Storm Troopers. My main problem with the Karate Kid remake, is not that it was remade in the first place, but that it’s been re-appropriated into a kid’s movie. The magic of the original 1984 film was that it was a coming-of-age story of an angstful teen, swept up in high school social tribulations, and all the peer pressure, self-identifying, and even young complicated love that ensues. It wasn’t about the karate so much as being an adolescent, so sorry if I’m hardly interested in what the modern adaptation’s 12-year-old has to bring to the role.

Here’s one of my favorite scenes from the original Karate Kid. You may remember that we also paid it homage in a past t-shirt graphic, finished by Munk One. I’ve also thrown in a couple other of my favorite cinematic teenage rebellion fight/chase sequences. They just don’t make ’em like they used to…
