This Friday, over 100 artists are coming together to re-appropriate the iconic Garbage Pail Kids trading card sets from our childhood. We are teaming up with Gallery 1988 and Topps to make this a reality… here are some examples of what you can expect from the exhibition, opening Sept 2nd from 7 to 10pm at Gallery 1988 on Melrose:

Contributing artist Robert Brandenburg is known for taking old magazine ads, photos, and paintings from garage sales and swap meets, and incorporating his own artwork into them. For our show, he started out with this original “Tommy Gun” Garbage Pail Kids card…

…and did this with it. His explanation is as follows:

The classic 1967 film “Bonnie and Clyde” is now so heavily identified with its leading actors that people often forget that others had auditioned for those roles. This studio still shot shows Tommy Gun during a screen test for the part of Clyde Barrow. While it’s usually accepted that Warren Beatty took the role for himself becausehewas producing the movie;others suggest that he did so upon the insistence of Faye Dunaway (cast as Bonnie Parker), who objected to Tommy’s diminutive stature…he being just over3 feet tall.”
