I’d say I’ve had my share of great California hamburgers. Of course, we have In-N-Out, everyone knows about it, even if you’ve never stepped foot in the West Coast. Other chain favorites are, of course, Fatburger, and ifyou’re ever out in the Inland Empire, Baker’s is the way to go.
As far as mom-and-pop styles, I think The Counter out here in West LA isn’t shabby, but it comes loaded with a lotta hype. If you want a great hamburger on the Westside without the hype but all the history, it’s the Apple Pan. Right now, my favorite hamburger comes outta Umami Burger on La Brea. Golden State on Fairfax is a close second. San Francisco? Pearl’s! Right up the street from our store on Post.
Somehow I ended up in Orange County for the better half of today, and had lunch at the legendary TK Burger in Costa Mesa. Although there are a few TKs sprinkled around the OC, this one is legitimate.. the ceilings are decorated with vintage surf rock record covers and lined with classic skateboards. I got the bacon avocado cheeseburger and didn’t regret a second of it. Onion rings with the special sauce are a must! And to think I used to be vegetarian…
