BOTTLED UP :: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AT TAPATIO

BOTTLED UP :: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AT TAPATIO

As any Californian knows, your preferred Mexican hot sauce says more about you than your cola choice or political party. At The Hundreds, there’s only ever been one player in the game, and that’s Tapatio – not just for the taste, but the brand integrity, company legacy, and fascinating history that surround the 40 year old hot sauce maestros.  Imagine our stoke factor upon learning that they’re just as big of fans of ours.  Which then begged the question… could we ever do anything together?

Several months back, we started discussions with Tapatio on how we could collaborate.  The biggest hurdle was getting the idea past Mr. Jose-Luis Saavedra, Sr., the founder and owner, who has nurtured his pet project since 1971 into the hot sauce empire it stands as today.  For four decades, he hasn’t let anyone come close to affecting the branding or label of Tapatio – the company is so particular and consistent, that they analyze the sticker, the glass bottle, how the sauce tastes and colors, down to the gritty details.  But with a bit of coaxing and the cooperation of the Tapatio team (which is truly a family operation), we shook hands on a partnership that’s all in the spirit of fun, and of course, an outstanding product.

Here’s an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Tapatio factory here in Los Angeles, where 100,000 cases of the hot sauce are packaged a day.  Put differently, that’s 1.2 Million bottles a day.  The full story of Tapatio, our collaboration together, and the rest of the photos will be printed in the forthcoming Summer issue of The Hundreds Magazine.

…And the unveiling of the final product…

Set to debut on Cinco de Mayo, The Hundreds X Tapatio will sit on your table soon…
