Hailing straight outta Canada, The Hundreds’ Vancouverite team rider Ian Twa hits the street to film a new video part below. Twa makes up one heavyhitting third of The Hundreds Canada skate team alongside Max Fine and Brian Gautreau.
We got an old friend of Ian’s – Take Five Trading Team Manager Bryan Wherry – to sit down with him and gain a bit of insight behind the video, Ian himself, and Canadian skateboarding as a whole in this interview.
BRYAN WHERRY: So you’re originally from Calgary – what first brought you to Vancouver and what has kept you here all this time?
Initially, I moved here with my homie Jason Cooper. I was sick of Calgary winters and just wanted to be on the coast. Now that I’ve lived here for 10 years, I don’t know if I could ever go back. During the summer Vancouver is just where I like to be. Going cliff jumping with the homies during the day and skating at night when it cools off.
Where did most of the filming take place for this The Hundreds video?
I’m pretty sure my whole part is filmed here in Vancouver.
We noticed a couple guest clips in there of Joey Williams (The Hundreds Canada Flow), how did that come about?
Joey has been my roommate for the past ten years and we skate together everyday. The fact that he is also repping for The Hundreds up here in Canada, throwing some clips of him in there was just a no brainer.
What’s your program like these days? What are you up to when you’re not skating?
Fuck, I’m going to school full-time. I go to BCIT and it’s structured differently then your average university. I am taking 6 classes this semester and it is very time consuming.
You have an international pro board on Zoo York. How did that come about? And what’s your relationship like with those guys?
I have been going to New York for the last 8 years every summer. The brand manager of Zoo is Canadian Ben Olyenik. Him and me have always been tight. After Affiliate went under, riding for Zoo was a real natural transition for me.
What’s up with skatenewspot.com And what role do you play over there?
Skatenewspot is a Vancouver-based skateboard website that showcases Canadian content and was started by my good friend Ben Olyenik about 9 years ago. Lately, I have been in charge of putting up daily content as well as a monthly interview. I mostly just put up stuff that I am hyped on or content related to the Canadian industry.
What’s your take on the Canadian skate scene in general?
Canadians are like sheep with the US being our shepherd. I don’t know, to me it feels like very few people seem to really benefit off the industry.
Who are some Canadian kids coming up right now that your hyped on?
I’m super hyped on the “Ollie Crew” as a whole, Tyler Warren, Dustin Henry, and Joey Larock. There are a lot of new kids I am hyped on but these kids just came to mind first.
