MEOW is Natalia Mantini aka Natalia Brutalia's photographic canvas. The Southern California beach-town native has a unique perspective on Los Angeles lifestyle, documenting her social scene, and capturing portraits of her girl friends with an even blend of grit and whimsy.

Fafi spent an evening at Nucleus in Alhambra for a signing of her new book, ‘The Carmine Vault’, and a mini-art exhibit.

Unif

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting the talented people behind Unif.  I haven’t had an interview- ish post in a while but was curious myself to learn more about the brand which I personally love.  I, like many others, lost my shit when I stumbled upon the Hellraisers.

Obvious question, where does the name Unif come from

Meaning: still unknown.

How did Unif come about, what inspired you to make the brand

We didn’t really have any other options. It kind of just chose us. We started making clothes for enjoyment but it gradually turned into an actual business.

What made you want to get involved with design, how’d you get started

I think we’re just born to want to do this. Not saying we’re necessarily good at it, just saying everyone involved has had a passion for creating since childhood. We started off making t-shirts for fun while working other full-time jobs and after 4 years, we were able to solely just do UNIF. The whole process was all really organic and I’m glad we weren’t some over-night success like a lot of brands back then because most of them are non-existent now.

3 inspirations

Everything and anything.

Are you a Bieber fan

I don’t think anyone at UNIF has done enough research to say yay or nay. All I know is he wore our jacket for the cover of Rolling Stones so can’t hate on him for that. He obviously knows what he’s doing.

Do you have a favorite piece you have made so far

Our signature sleeveless T’s are pretty much our baby. Other than that, we like to see each piece as it’s own. Our line is so eclectic and all over the place that it’s hard to pick just one piece. They’re all kind of good (to us) for different reasons.

What can we look forward to seeing from Unif in the future

More. We hope. We’re always thinking of new items and how we can make them ours. It started with T’s, then went on to dresses, jackets, bottoms, shoes, belts, hats, etc. Maybe bike racks or baby seats? Who knows? Whatever we feel at the moment.

If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be

Jesus Christ. He’s super famous.

Which designers do you admire

All of them. Anyone who decides they have a vision and follows through with it. Designers of clothing, music, thought, architecture. Anyone who contributes.

Who is your favorite Disney princess and why

Cinderella. You can’t beat a good rags to riches story.

Words to live by

You don’t have to like everyone, just treat them as if you do.
