This week I talked with clothing designer Lily L.

Where did you grow up
In Santa Rosa, CA. Sonoma County/Bay Area.
When did you start sewing
I first started learning some sewing from my mom when I was like 10, but we would just sew simple things. I really started focusing on it more seriously and taking classes for it when I was 14.
When did you know you wanted to become a designer
I always liked drawing clothing, but didn’t actually think of doing it as a career until I was 14.
Who has influenced you the most
My mom, she is such a strong person, and she always supports me in pursuing my dreams. She’s always been there for me. She believes in me. She’s constant.

This year, what do you hope to accomplish
I hope to accomplish a lot. My goal is to stay busy with pursuing my clothing design career, this year and many more to come. I feel like if I’m too specific I’m not going to be setting the bar high enough for myself.
Proudest moment so far
Seeing people buy and wear my clothing! It’s the most amazing feeling seeing someone wear what I’ve designed. I love every single person who has worn my designs. I don’t think they know how much it really means to me. Like when I saw the lovely Hanna Beth wear the custom dress I designed for her on the red carpet of the Young Hollywood awards this year, I got so happy.
Any projects you’re currently working on
Currently I’m working on promoting my new collection that I just launched on LilyL.com. I’m also starting to design a couple party dresses that I will be releasing in early Fall.
Favorite designer
Christophe Decarnin for Balmain. Love what he is doing, really amazing.
Also, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler. They’re great designers!
Least favorite thing about this industry
Oh just that some people think you have to be really blunt and pretty much rude to be in this industry. It’s not true, you can be thoughtful and kind, but just stand firm behind what you believe. You definitely have to be strong and take a lot of rejection and criticism, but I think it’s important to stay who you are and not let it sour your attitude.
Favorite quote
“Please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough.” from ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ by Stephen Chbosky
