IN YOUR FACE.

Okay I’m gonna do a little fast-forward/rewind thing here. I’m not totally done updating on Seattle yet, but we had to fly back to Southern California for the semi-annual Agenda Trade Show in Orange County today.  So let’s skip forwards to that.

I know I say it every time, but it’s only because it’s true. This was the biggest, baddest, and bestest Agenda Show to date.. seemed at least twice the size of the last, with every key brand from around the world representing. Since the recent demise of the ASR show, the action sports and streetwear industry are now converging under Agenda’s roof to reach their customer base.  This was the first time that the snowboarding world seeped into Agenda as well, and everyone was stoked.

And Aaron Levant orchestrates it all.

Brooklyn Dom, Ben Hundreds, and Mighty Ray talking about hair today, gone tomorrow..

Look at Salman Agah’s t-shirt.  So rad.  Gotta be decades old… All we need is the cast, Salman.

You know what’s better than a photo of Mink?

2 of ‘em.  Guarded by her family, Crooks & Castles.

Danny Kass fought the law. And the law won.

Dingo and Danny are Grenade.  We’re about to have a fun week in Colorado with these 2.  More about that later…

Nipsey Hu$$le, always on that MARATHON.

I need to snowboard with Mike West from 686.

Tallywood and Ashley are The Hundreds family.

I finally got Dave for the blog. Usually he’s handing me Blue Moons at Epstein’s, so not much opportunity to photograph him otherwise.

Kobe (on the right) represents our Chinese counterparts, Subcrew, out of Hong Kong.

Somewhere behind that camera with a fuzzy mohawk is Willie T.

Kerin Rose is awesome because she makes all those crazy glasses that Gaga and Rihanna wear.  Joy (Kr3w) is awesome because she’s awesome.

MAGIC wraps up it’s 3rd and final day here in Las Vegas.  Here’s the view of the SLATE section within Magic, which hosts upscale streetwear brands like ours, Crooks & Castles, Hall of Fame, and 10 Deep.

Huf is also representing.  And as always, everyone’s buzzing about Huf‘s premium footwear range.  There’s Sweets front and center, and 10 points for spotting Anne in this pic:

The trifecta, this is like the Miami Heat of the internet: Moxsie.  Nitrolicious.  Freshness.

Russ (SSUR) has a big event going on at Undefeated in LA Friday night to celebrate his shoe with Converse.

The 2 on the right are our former interns, and now they’re out in Austin, Texas working on opening up their own shop, Gadfly.

Rob holding down the fort at LRG.

And a real pleasure meeting Nick from Imaginary Foundation at our booth this afternoon.  Always been a fan of their graphics and printing.

This week, The Hundreds is in Las Vegas to attend and exhibit at the semi-annual MAGIC Trade Show, pretty much the most iconic fashion tradeshow in the business.

Day 1 gets off to a good start with Master P on our flight.  Here he’s making Ben say UGHHH:

Down at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, the party’s already underway.

Benny Gold holdin’ steady:

Vlad (VANS) about to TCB:

Chanel and Drama (Young & Reckless):

Big Ben Baller and his diamond-encrusted dice:

Estevan Oriol and Big Lucky ready to roll:

Ben Baller’s back is courtesy of Mr. Cartoon:

Mega (Black Scale) is our next-door neighbor here:

I got a nice surprise visit from my old friend, artist Jeff Soto:

Some Local LV love.  Our Vegas stronghold, KNYEW:

And some of my favorite MAGIC friends, the crew from TRUE in San Francisco.  Next year, they seal the deal on 15 years!

Oooohhhhh yeah and there’s a baby white tiger.

STERN TALKING-TO.

#, #

I know, another beach shot?

I’m in Orange County for a couple days, as we gear up for the AGENDA Show in Huntington Beach. But today, I was invited to speak at the 2010 Action Sports Conference.  My panel was mediated by Keir Dillon, and I was flanked by Keith Hufnagel (Huf) and Aaron Levant (Agenda) as we discussed action sports as a culture.

Here in the greenroom, DJ Greyboy and Huf catch up.

Corbin from Macaframa blessed me with one of the DVDs:

There’s Cab, Keir Dillon, and the inimitable Christian Hosoi.  That was a huge one for me, personally.  The greatest:

So anyways, it’s showtime.  The crowd was a little dazed by day’s end, and the conversation veered towards the state of print media, randomly.  But that’s how these things usually go.  Anyways, it was a great experience, and I’m sure I did a solid job of ensuring everyone hates me more than ever now.  See you at Agenda.

FRIENDLY FIRE.

This week in New York, Capsule was also going off, a more upscale tradeshow dedicated to showcasing high-end brands and designers like Wood Wood, Edwin Jeans, Rogues Gallery, and Naked & Famous.

I stopped by to say hi to our friends Mike and Jason, the duo behind Parabellum.

Their accessories line is made of reservation bison leather, that strip underneath the book is 15 years old.  American made through and through.

The quality of these pieces is unrivaled. If you’re in LA, you can see ‘em for yourself over at Union.

This morning, Ben, Scotty, and I walked over to see our buddy Nick’s newest Boundless store in Manhattan. I’m sure you’re already familiar with their first shop out in Brooklyn.

There’s Stephane and Nick runnin’ thangs.

Boundless is a strong partner of The Hundreds, so check either of their NY locations out for the latest from us and the world’s leading streetwear brands,.. better yet, check out their website.

AGENDA NEW YORK.

#

This week is the Agenda Trade Show in New York. Usually, you see us exhibiting at Agenda in Huntington Beach, but for the first time, the show steps foot in the Big Apple.  It’s worked out perfectly for everyone involved thus far, and since we’re on the other seaboard, we’re gaining access and exposure to lots of accounts that aren’t typically accessible with West Coast shows.

I forced Scott and Josh of 10Deep to take this photo.

Nick at Boundless was having a great day.

Felix (Famous) and Olympic silver medalist in snowboarding, and really-fun-to-party-with Danny Kass (Grenade):

GRENADE.  Danny and Dingo are 2/3 of your worst nightmare. The last 1/3 belongs to cancer.

Kashia is the streetwear darling, but more importantly, works with Odyssey denim.  We just celebrated her 21st birthday at Goldbar. It was kinda sorta really really fun.

THIS GUY’S NAME IS CUMCOUCH AND I’M NOT KIDDING.

This guy’s name is Everybody Loves Ray Mate From Mighty Healthy NYC. And when you’re not around, he’s doing a really funny impression of you.

SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.

This is a story about the big guy vs. the little guy, and it’s a story about how the little guy wins.  Not because he’s stronger, or has more money, or because he knows more people,… but because he’s smarter.  It’s a story that I love because it’s our story.  It’s also the story of the Agenda Tradeshow.

agenda10_thehundreds2

A streetwear/skate tradeshow is like this:  Brands from all over the world gather in one place to showcase their collections for future seasons and stores attend to make their orders for the year.  Aaron Levant started this show when he was just a kid in his early 20s, it was a response to the more established, big, corporate shows out there like ASR and MAGIC.  The first tradeshow we ever exhibited in was Agenda, back when Aaron used to host it in downtown LA. It was just about 20 brands or so, I think just a handful of those brands still exist today.

Over the years, Agenda blossomed, growing in size, but more importantly, respect and reputation.  It’s not easy to put on a good tradeshow.  You have to be aware of keeping all these brands (who consider themselves the best, and deserving as much) happy.  You have to find a venue to work with, money to back it, and you have to win over the favor of exhibitors and buyers alike… That’s not even something you can buy, you have to put in your dues and earn it.

Agenda did it.  And I think much of their success can be attributed to working with the right brands in their roster.  Not the largest brands, or best-selling, most popular, or attractive.  Just the brands that hold some type of legitimacy in our world and the ones who are consistently offering good product.  The problem we’ve had over the years with the big shows is that in the end, they really couldn’t care less about us, the little guy.  They have more “important” clients to deal with, mega-corporations hiding behind a guise of hip apparel, who can offer all kinds of financial returns for convenient booth placement.  In bigger tradeshows’ eyes, we don’t have much to offer, both money and image-wise.

…And that’s where they go wrong.

Aaron understands to build and maintain a successful tradeshow, you don’t need to work with the biggest, famous, richest brands.. you need to work with the RIGHT brands.  I ran into Mike T from Obey today and we both agreed that what makes Agenda work is that it’s still so raw and level… literally, figuratively, on our level.  And in that way, Agenda stays relevant.

If you’ve been reading between the lines, this isn’t just about Agenda and tradeshow politics.  It’s about how crucial it is to heed the little guy, respect him, and take care of him.  Because one day, that guy’ll grow up to be the BIG guy, and he’ll remember exactly how you kept score.

The Agenda show was held over the weekend in Huntington Beach.  Here’s Revok laying the lettering for the entrance mural.

agenda10_thehundreds11

There’s always 1 brand that gets people talking at every show.  For me, this time, that brand was Freshjive.  The new no-label range from Klotz and co. is fashion-forward, wearable, and still maintains that pushy flare (Be forewarned before you click on that link!  NSFW.. actually Not Safe for The Faint of Heart).

agenda10_thehundreds3

Greg Mishka and Joshy from Rebel 8 compare inkwork.

agenda10_thehundreds4

… and they got together on this biker-inspired fitted as well.  By far, the best New Era I saw at the show.

agenda10_thehundreds7

Erica is over at Podium now.  DVS/Matix represent!

agenda10_thehundreds15

I ran into P-Rod in the hallway.  It was hard to get a conversation out of him with so many people wanting to say Hi.

agenda10_thehundreds10

And there’s Paul in front of his P-Rod booth, surrounded by other skate luminaries you may recognize.  This year, Agenda introduced The Berrics / Agenda tradeshow, a downstairs component to which was probably one of the best put-together skateboarding shows on its own.  The supplement added life and character to the already bustling Agenda.

agenda10_thehundreds6

Hanni and Anne at HUF, who also showed in The Berrics / Agenda.  As far as skate apparel goes, Huf takes the cake, especially with Keith’s new footwear program.  My favorite brand of the show though? Gotta be Skate Mental!

agenda10_thehundreds9

Now that’s dedication.

agenda10_thehundreds8

Joy (Krew/Supra) and Joe (Linkin Park / Suru).

EVERYONE. LOVES. JOY.

agenda10_thehundreds13

And there’s Joe talking to the man himself.  Aaron Levant (Agenda) on the left, with Ashley (Krew/Supra).

agenda10_thehundreds12

Angel and Ashley over at Krew/Supra showed us Krew’s introductory footwear line.  This isn’t Supra, this is actually Krew shoes!  More fashion-y, sophisticated, casual.  Can be skated in, but more about lookin’ good.  Here’s your exclusive first look at one of the styles:

agenda10_thehundreds5

Thirsty?

agenda10_thehundreds1

Hungry?  Ben and I headed around the corner to TK Burger.  Like Agenda, this hamburger joint just gets better and better.  TK Burger = the Agenda of burger stands.

EXPOSURE.

Here’s the remainder of our Capsule Trade Show coverage, and I saved the best for last.  This is Lorne.  His brother Brandon founded a denim brand called Naked & Famous not more than a year and a half ago.  It’s been one of my favorite denim lines to watch over the past several seasons, primarily because of the quality of their raw Japanese selvedge and somehow affordable price points.

capsule_thehundreds43

I kept telling these guys that they needed their own reality show. They were both characters, Canadians, family’s been in the shmata business forever.  So they know how to procure the finest materials, produce them at the lowest minimums, and the cheapest cost for you, the customer.

capsule_thehundreds32

The thing with Naked & Famous is that all their denim’s made in Canada from Japanese fabrics, and ALL of the jeans are raw.  Why won’t they ever introduce a washed pair?  ”Would you want to buy a brand new Ferrari but the leather interior’s all weathered and worn in and the seat looks and feels like someone’s been sitting in it forever?” Loren demanded.  I didn’t really have an answer for that one.

capsule_thehundreds40

So because all the denim they make is raw, they get creative with different offerings.  This pair is so raw that you can still see the cotton seeds in the grain.

capsule_thehundreds38

And what about this one?  The heaviest pair of denim ever created. It almost broke the machines just to sew the seams.  Comes in at a belt-buckling 24 oz.

capsule_thehundreds33

Naked & Famous also features a selection of button-up woven shirts.  Loren chimes in over my shoulder, “…Made in the oldest shirt factory in America!”

capsule_thehundreds100

Naked & Famous is all about poking fun at celebrity culture, and the Warholian mentality of teasing the very people who buy into it.  To learn more about Naked & Famous denim, check their website.  Tell ‘em The Hundreds sent you.

KEEP IT MOVING.

The Capsule Trade Show has wrapped up in Las Vegas but I still got some coverage floating around for you.  For the industry folk, I’m sure you’re already keen on all the positive buzz that Capsule attracted during the week, definitely the most promising show out there for all avenues of contemporary fashion.

Scotty, The Hundreds Sales Manager, gets his hustle on at our booth. Some of the snooty upscale designer lines in the building raised an eyebrow that we, as a streetwear brand, were showing at Capsule.  Deirdre kindly reminded them that if they were concerned about exclusivity, The Hundreds turns down more accounts than anyone else at the show.  Scotty’s like the Ron Artest of streetwear, ain’t nobody getting past him.  He runs our brand sales like it’s Fort Knox and the fountain of youth is inside.  So, rest assured. Haters.

capsule_thehundreds36

Our Japanese distributor, Steve, swung by to give us a look at the current issue of Warp Japan Magazine.

… the cast and crew:

It was good to see my old friend Dao-Yi, showing his brands Public School and Black Apples at Capsule.

capsule_thehundreds34

Public School appeases even the snobbiest of fashionistas.  I love taking cues from Dao-Yi’s collections, always utilizing the most forward design with creative construction and of course quality materials.

I’ll give you a few examples of what I’m talking about.  Just when you think you’ve figured out every way to situate the standard pocket, Public School changes your mindset.
