JOEY FATTS.

#, #

One of the most talked-about rap artists at SXSW this year was our man Joey Fatts.  Here he is holding it down at the Thrasher/Converse “DEATH MATCH” showcase with Aston Matthews:

And Bay Area, you’re in luck.  Joey will be performing, along with CBG, at the 5-year anniversary of The Hundreds San Francisco this Friday night.  Our crew will be there as well, so we’ll be seeing you soon…!!

FADER FORT.

#

Since we’ve been coming to SXSW, the anchor of the entire week has been the Fader Fort, which is The Fader Magazine‘s daily showcase of what’s hot in music for the next year.  It’s always a perfect combination of rap, rock, and electronic, with the Saturday night closing performance being the most talked-about show of SXSW without fail.  Years past have seen everyone from Amy Winehouse to Kanye West grace the stage – this year it was Macklemore, Bun B, and Diddy coming in to shut the Fort down at the tail end of Earl’s and French Montana’s sets.

We sat down with Fader’s president and publisher Andy Cohn (who also is a big The Hundreds supporter) to give us a bit of backstory on Fader Fort and why it remains the main stage at SXSW after all these years:

SXSW 2013 :: WHAT’S THE BEST PART?

What’s the best part of SXSW?? Featuring Trinidad James, Joey Fatts, and Charli XCX:

So many different sides to SXSW and we do our best to capture as much of it that makes sense with The Hundreds lifestyle.  Not just rap, not just punk, not just mainstream, not just underground, the appeal of SXSW is that there’s something for everyone here.

The Thrasher / Converse “Death Match” house is always the spot to watch awesome skating by pros and locals alike, while getting sunblasted and listening to the artists play on 2 stages.  We were here to see our man Joey Fatts perform; more on him later.

I’ve gotta say that Filter consistently has the best up-and-coming musicians at some of the easiest and chill venues.  The Cedar Street Showdown is always their most hectic, but if you got your position, it’s a pretty unforgettable experience.

We’re here today to see The Neighbourhood:

And one of our asterisks on the schedule, HAIM:

We love the LA-based sister trio: part Fleetwood Mac, part ’90s R&B, part Michael Jackson… These girls are super badass – thumbs up.

I’ve always got a soft spot for some FIDLAR.  This was late last night at Filter/Tumblr’s showcase:

Then headed to the Brooklyn Vegan rooftop gig with Brooke Candy:

and XXYYXX closes out our night.

….Sorta.

Remember that ASAP Rocky show I blogged about from SXSW last week?

Well, turns out there was actually quite a bit behind it.  I mean, this was the ASAP mob in the stairwell leading up to the performance, right before Rocky’s bouncer put the fear of God in me.  stutter. stutter. stuuutter. (Sorry, long, semi-humiliating story.)

Anyways, Spaghetto has a behind-the-scenes of the night, it’s part 3 of her SXSW video recap, which you’ve been probably catching over on Jenn and TK’s blog, Those Two.  In fact, for Part 1 and Part 2 of Spaghetto’s SXSW series with the girls, CBG, and other RSWD crew, head over to Those Two right now.

THE HUNDREDS : SXSW 2012

Here’s a teaser of some live footage we’ll be bringing you over the next couple weeks from SXSW 2012…

SXSW : SOUTH BY STREET WEAR

SXSW Music 2012.  Look long and hard at this photograph. This sums up a lot:

SXSW started as a small festival in the early ’90s (soon thereafter incorporating a media and interactive component) to break new music to the industry and public.  Artists like John Mayer, James Blunt, and Hanson were all discovered through SXSW performances, the film The Hurt Locker debuted there, even the popular application Foursquare.  So, over the years, SXSW has become somewhat of a breeding ground for undiscovered talent from all creative walks.  Having grown from an initial 700 registrants to over 12,000 in attendance, and thousands of musicians performing in 90 venues across Austin, Texas, SXSW is Ground Zero for trendwatching.  Which is why we at The Hundreds base an annual inspiration trip around this week, to get away from cliche fashion hubs and sourcing pools, get out of our city, and think a little differently about youth culture.

(The Hundreds at SXSW this year : Ben Hundreds, Patrick, Vito, Zach, Eleanore, and not pictured: myself, Ashley, Benjie, Scotty iLL, B.Mo, Chelsea, Alexander Spit, Jenn, TK, and El Guacamole.)

But this year there was a noticeable shift.  For one, the rap and hip-hop element was as pervasive as ever, opening the doors for greater Streetwear involvement.  As you may have noticed, a lot more of our peers were down in Austin this time around, sponsoring events and pinpointing talent.

Moreso, SXSW was noticeably tainted by corporate participation.  Let’s just say that Taco Bell was enticing concertgoers by handing out free Doritos tacos inside one of the festival’s most exclusive venues.  Artists would break up live songs by shouting out company sponsors… but, can you really blame anyone here?  The expression of music, the art of such, does not come for free.  And if we as listeners refuse to pay musicians in support of their craft, then how else do we expect them to survive?  They need to be compensated somehow… can we really expect to take their hard-fought workmanship without giving back?  So, consequently, we must shower attention upon tacky advertising who then pay it forward to the artists.  If you can think of a better way for it to operate, I’m sure the record industry would love to hear it.

On an entirely separate note, have I told you how much I love the city of Austin, Texas? The locals are all smiles and open doors, creativity is unimpeded and free flowing, and duuude, the barbecue…  Outside of live music, I did find some incredible moments to capture around town.

Keep Austin weird.

SXSW 2012 : THE PEOPLE

#, #

Of course, the best part of SXSW being the friendly faces.  The people are what make this experience unlike any other in the world. Youth and open minds traveling from around the world to support and learn about new musicians. This is the groundswell, the influencers shaping how tomorrow sounds.  Here are some photos of friends, The Hundreds fans, next generation artists, musical ingenues, and others from the SXSW cultural tribe:

SXSW 2012 : THE AIRPLANE BOYS

#, #

The Airplane Boys unloaded on an unsuspecting SXSW, the hip-hop duo captivated and energized crowds of fans both old and new.. definitely one of the most compelling performances I witnessed of any music showcase this past week.  Stay tuned for these two from Toronto.  When we’re back here in a year and APB’s everywhere, you’ll remember who told you first.
