ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK.

#, #, #

In 2013, L.A.’s Streetwear community continues to evolve and diversify.  You still got the veteran players anchoring the foundation and then you got the next generations capitalizing on the road the pioneers paved.  Speaking of cornerstones, you got Brooklyn Projects on Melrose.  This was where The Hundreds found its footing, and for almost every Streetwear brand trying to enter the Los Angeles market, you gotta run it by Dom first.

Trends in, trends out, yet some of us are here for the long haul. Dom Deluca aka DOM BOMB is one of the city’s street kingpins. Show some respect to the man who’s been here, done that, and will still be holding it down for Streetwear long after your Fairfax receipts fade.

DISCLAIMER: Before all you rumormongers soil your skinny jeans, WE DID NOT MAKE THIS T-SHIRT.

Brooklyn Projects did.  The Pantera lyrics-inspired shirt is a commentary on what’s going on in our world.  Is it a diss? An homage?  Either way, that “N” is ripped from our logo.  I guess a couple of the brands targeted by Dom’s tee have been making a big stink about it, which is hilarious to me.  First of all, the trend IS “dead” in more ways than one.  The Streetwear that we all knew and fondly remember is a thing of the past; there’s an entire new generation that doesn’t know who 90% of the names on this list are, or care.  Streetwear is as saturated and blown-out as ever – will the strong survive? Interesting to see how it’ll all pan out…

Secondly, if you’re even remotely involved in the Streetwear industry, you can’t take yourself so seriously.  We’re not changing the world here, we’re printing t-shirts.  You’re really not that cool, bro. Like Barbara Kruger just told Complex, we’re all just “a ridiculous clusterfuck of totally uncool jokers.”  She’s absolutely right.

Dom’s Nike SB is almost here. We were the first to report it back in November.  He promised me two purr!

And it’s not an afternoon at BP without cameos.  Charlie from Anthrax, fresh off the Golden Gods Awards.

And the best of ’90s skateboarding in one frame: Pat Rumney, Vinny Ponte, Dom the F Bomb, Alphonzo Rawls, Kareem Campbell, and Chad Fernandez out back skating the ramp:

Ben and I made our way over to the new Peas & Carrots shop to say hey to the homies before the leave on tour with Casey:

Charlie!

Since Opening Day, P&C S.S. has been attracting the hot buzz in town.  If you live here or visiting, check it out — this is an accurate sample of where global Streetwear is headed.

Tried & True is just right around the corner from us on Fairfax:

And welcome our newest neighbor, YOUth (by the homies at JBC (Just Be Cool)) !  Doors just opened.  Love and SUPPORT:

THE GIFT OF GETTING IT.

#

If you’re like me, you’re waiting until Monday, late-afternoon, to commence Christmas shopping, and by then you’re gonna get stuck in traffic, there’s nothing good left in the malls, you’ll stress out and run out of time, then tell all your loved ones that you’re sorry but their gift is on the way, and really have the best intentions to order something online for them the next day so that hopefully it comes by next week, but by then you’re kinda over it, and regardless, it’s already past the point, and maybe they’ll just forget and forgive, and next year, you’ll learn your lesson and shop early!  You swear.

But hopefully you’re not like me and you’re finishing up all your gift buying this weekend.  Here’s a suggestion if you’re in the L.A. area, Fairfax:

Obviously, but of course, there’s our store.  The Hundreds Los Angeles at 7909 Rosewood Ave.

There’s Hall of Fame down the block, with the Huf pop-up shop inside:

Diamond Supply right next door:

Flight Club back up towards us:

and RVCA right next door:

There’s also a handful of other major players like Odd Future, Pink Dolphin, Supreme, and Dope on the block… I didn’t have time to take photos of them this time, but I promise by next year I’ll learn my lesson.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK.

#

There’ve been rumblings (and grumblings) about this store for weeks.  Apparently this shop DOPE COUTURE was opening on Fairfax and the neighborhood was a little confused.  DOPE Couture is a well-known Streetwear boutique and brand based in Indiana.. but they’re coming onto our street here in LA? GASP.

We were hanging out on Rosewood today and Matte (in the red hat) approached us with his girl Brett who helps him run DOPE. He introduced himself like a normal human being (trust me, a rarity in our scene) and warmly invited everyone back to their shop to drink and celebrate.  I’d say that’s the first time that’s ever happened on Fairfax. Ever.

And so we gladly obliged.  I got to know Matte a little bit – this kid’s only in his mid-20s but he’s hustled hard to get where he’s at.  He put all his money into his first store, and now he’s doing it again with this shop in LA.  He says he’s here on Fairfax to fill the void for a proper Streetwear venue in our community.

In pursuit of that mission, he’s definitely got all the right brands stocked.  Publish and 10 Deep here…

some BBC there…

MALIN+GOETZ candles over there…

With HUF’s absence on the block, it’s nice to see a new home for Keith Hufnagel’s apparel here on the shelves of DOPE. There’s also Motivation and Leaders product, which is big for the midwest considering these two stores and brands are from Michigan and Chicago.  Since DOPE’s from Indiana, one of their goals is to support their neck of the woods and give the Midwestern brands prominent floor space.

I like that they took the effort to build out a presentable Streetwear boutique with clean, minimal design – not all IKEA crazy.

And of course, you can find plenty of their inhouse label in-stock.

Welcome to the block, guys.  Good luck and much respect on doing things your way.

CRUSHING.

A week ago I was at the beach on a balmy 80 degree day, and now it’s raining again in Los Angeles with no end in sight.  Then again, Arkansas had 23 earthquakes this week, so I guess things could be worse.

The Hundreds Los Angeles:

The Spring 2011 collection is up and running.  I really like our new messenger bags with the suede panels, as well as the Paparazzi 2 Backpack.. I’ll be giving a bit of a review on that bag later.

Honk honk. What is this psychedelic space shuttle that pulled up in front?  It’s the Colt 45 bus, they’re promoting their new Blast beer — flavored malt beverages.  Hands off, kids!

There’s Willie T again!

This is the most amount of girls that have been in The Hundreds LA at one time, ever.

Flashbacks to the last scene of Dumb and Dumber.

Jay Ughh and that purple drank. Check out his newest video for CBG.

Speaking of rap, KREAYSHAWN and VNASTY:

And finally, down the block to Hall of Fame

…where Gilbere Forte was about to lay into a live performance.

RAP UP.

#, #, #

Last week was a bit of a blur.  It started off in Boston, which was enjoyable if not just for the seasons.

Then back to L.A., a couple days onset at the Warner Bros. Studios lot for a phenomenally big-deal production that I’m not at liberty to talk about, so let’s just move on…

It was Natalia’s birthday, in case you forgot. Lauren prefers her Natalia in 3 dimensions.

All Natalia wanted for her birthday was my favorite fallback cake: the Paradise Cake from Kings Hawaiian.

The 10 Deep pop-up shop popped up inside Hall of Fame recently.  Scott and the crew did an amazing job, not only with the presentation, but with the range.  Hopefully this means we can look forward to more 10 Deep stores? (nudge nudge)

The Fairfax sensation sweeping the nation, and hotter than any clothing brand on the block right now: Tyler the Creator and the OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) crew.  They’ve been skulking around the street for years now (3 years ago at our Block Party), running Reserve, wrecking lives, and generating all sorts of bedlam and mayhem.  Now they’ve got Pitchfork in their pocket, a tour through London, New York, and upcoming LA that sold out in mere hours… the media, the industry, and the streets are lining these kids up as hip-hop’s big answer, if they don’t kill you or each other first.

Over on Rosewood… Business as usual at The Hundreds Los Angeles.

Public Label is fully stocked and performing as planned.  Seems like the Public Label customer in L.A. is especially drawn to the fleece and jackets in the collection. But hint hint, the denim is the sleeper hit.

Taryn (RVCA) is fully stocked in my spaceship.  Speaking of RVCA, congrats to BJ Penn on that win this weekend.  BJ Penn NO KA OI.

Now that I got that out of the way, get ready for some big news on The Hundreds’ blog.. you’ll just have to wait and see.
