JESSICA CLARK.

#, #

In the midst of the summer, our friend Jessica came to visit us at The Hundreds. You’re probably well aware of her now; notwithstanding our cover for the latest issue of The Hundreds Magazine, she’s also a constant on Instagram’s Popular Page and gracing thousands of Tumblr feeds a day.  The 26-year-old Australian is an employee and student of Streetwear, but she is most notably recognized for her obvious face tattoos.  Since our magazine released, the questions have been pouring in about her and it seems like many are as transfixed and curious about Jessica as we were.  Jessica isn’t a model, she’s our friend, and during the short week she spent in Los Angeles, I was the constant observer.  From suburban malls to the coast of Malibu, I followed her and lived her life and existence, taking on the perspective of an eager and intelligent young person in America for the first time.  I documented everything.  Here are just some excerpts from the experience. (To see and read more about Jessica Clark, read The Hundreds magazine online or get the print version HERE)

The most profound time together was under the gun of NORM at Will Rise Tattoo on Fairfax.  Jessica gets “Conscious” drilled into her jawline, a proud badge of awareness and conscious living.  As the needle broke her skin and permanently altered Jessica’s face once again, tears fell from her eyes.  I asked her if it hurt. Was she crying of pain?  ”No,” she softly replied, “I’m elated.”

(Oh yeah, and then there are these. Those stories will have to wait for another post):

THE HUNDREDS “BEN VS. BOBBY” PACK

#, #, #

The Hundreds is proud to introduce our newest footwear model, entitled the “Hoya.”

We’ve been working on this shoe for close to 2 years now, so to inaugurate its release, we are gonna do something special.  Ben and I have each designed our own Hoya, but we’re not gonna tell you whose is whose.  First, you have to vote on which one you like best over on our Facebook page.  Here’s the fun part.  On Tuesday at noon PST the voting ends and we will announce whose shoe is whose Tuesday right here on the blog and Facebook page.  The person’s shoe with the LEAST amount of votes has to wear the other’s face on a t-shirt for an entire week*!!!

The Ben vs. Bobby HOYAS will release this Friday exclusively at The Hundreds Los Angeles, The Hundreds San Francisco, The Hundreds New York, and The Hundreds Santa Monica, and Monday in our Online Shop.

_______________________

The first Hoya is constructed of a premium full-grain nubuck upper with an air mesh bootie, lined with premium leather as well as the sockliner.  High-quality waxed shoelaces, sophisticated folded edges with zero stitching executed on the overlay panels.  To top it off, there’s a 3M-molded TPU body cage for extra support:

The second Hoya has a safari-print pattern on premium leather overlay pieces, with a silk suede and high-quality canvas upper.  Premium die-cut leather cage for extra support, neoprene air-mesh bootie for better fit and breathability.  There’s a rolled-edge executed on the safari-print toe and heel overlay, with premium pigskin leather sockliner.  Lastly, there are cork speckles on the rubber outsole.

There are only 100 of each Hoya produced, emphasized by the laser-etched individualized numbers on the leather hang tag and accompanying rear heel loop.  The Hoyas are the first of our “Red Box” shoes, our most limited footwear releases,  lined with a red insole and packaged in a red The Hundreds JAGS™ shoebox. They also come with a parallel shoe bag and graphic t-shirt.

*And here’s the t-shirt. If I win, Ben’s gotta wear my fat face.  If Ben wins, I have to wear his Chewbacca mug. (I kinda hope I lose)

Thanks for all the positive feedback to the post on Abe.  He actually passed away around this time of the year, that’s why I was by his graveside that day, and that’s what inspired me to write that tribute to him.  I wasn’t trying to tug heartstrings or tearjerk, but I thought it’d be a great way to end 2011, and another solid year of The Hundreds — by educating the world on a profoundly influential person in my life.  Someone whose words and wisdom have trickled down to the brand and company you see standing before you today.  Shows you how much of a difference one person can make, right?

There were some questions. Some people asked if Ben and I finished law school after that summer spent with Abe.  The answer is Yes.  We finished what we started, even though we didn’t necessarily want to. We worked it to our advantage (Ben taking classes that helped him with business and negotiations, I wrote a 50-page-paper on the legalization of street art and graffiti).  I know I preach a lot of passion-talk on the web, but there is something that is actually more pressing and of worth than even chasing your dreams.  And that is Responsibility.

Upholding and fulfilling responsibility comes first.  Always.  Before your passion, before your heart.  Another wise man once taught me, “A boy is led by emotions. A man is led by principles.”  It’s imperative to listen to your heart and live a passion-filled life, but first, you’ve got to clear your obligations.  If  you’ve made promises to others or even to yourself, complete them before you concentrate on your own selfish desires.  Be smart.  Be selfless.

Yeah, I can sit here and tell the 16-year-old kids on the other side of the screen to abandon all sensibilities and do whatever their heart desires, but some of them are taking care of their family, nurturing a single mother, trying to stay in school and earn a degree.  Some of you are stuck in the inner-city, trying to make ends meet, maybe with a child of your own, your friends are in jail and you don’t want to meet up with them.. And some of you are dead-ended in lackluster jobs, you may even have a bachelor’s in something but your life has spiraled down to a cubicle, staring at a pushpin board of Post-it notes.  But you’re upholding your responsibility and handling your life, one duty at a time; that’s nothing short of commendable.  Sometimes life isn’t about what you want to do, it’s what you need to do so you can get to where you want to go.  (If I haven’t lost you yet, I probably lost you there).  Just make the most of it, because even a research attorney you’d never heard of or cared about until now, who memorized books and mentored students in a dark library for decades, made the most of it, and the ripples of Abe’s work and life have touched every shore that The Hundreds is sold on.
