HOME ON THE ORANGE.

Today, Pat, Micha, and I worked from Pat’s place up in Echo Park or Los Feliz or Silver Lake or wherever.  We’re currently designing and building out our Spring and Summer 2012 range of apparel..

Yes, this is the same Pat as Anti-Orange Pat. As in our Apparel Designer who is deathly afraid of oranges, or anything orange for that matter.

So, I thought it a bit strange that his house was surrounded by orange and tangerine trees.  Hmmm… Like straight up in the middle of a grove.

And then I looked around his house and noticed that there was more orange in here than any other normal residence.!  Needless to say, I was boggled.

Darya’s kiiiinda orange (Okay, that’s a stretch)

Pat’s cat, Sammi (Sweetheart), isn’t orange, but her Jersey Shore counterpart is!

Pat, you’re weird.

GRINDIN’.

#

I just noticed that I’ve been posting a lotta food blogs lately.  I need to go on a diet.

In the spirit of great local food, I wanna introduce you to the guys at GRINDHAUS.  This is DeJuan, Thomas, and Trevor.. Wes wasn’t around when I swung by to pick up some fresh sausages to bbq.  I love grilling, but tired of the same old hamburgers and hot dogs, even getting a little worn out on the carne asada and Korean kalbi/bulgogi.

So when I heard about Grindhaus opening up in Hollywood, it was exactly what I was looking for.  These guys have a great story, having worked in the food industry for years and coming together to form a foodie’s dream team.  They make gourmet sausages here and were virtually sold out by late lunchtime.  I came up big with Boar Bratwurst, Duck, Venison, and even some Vegan sausages.  Ask for some of their homemade hot mustard and sweet pickles to lather on top.  By far, easily, the best sausages I’ve eaten, and I do realize how suspect that sounds.

Oh one more thing. Grindhaus LA’s got a food truck that’ll be in the streets soon. This is gonna kill my diet…

78 DEGREES. FAHRENHEIT.

It was pushing 80 degrees in Los Angeles this weekend, so where better to run off to than the beach?… Sometimes it trips me out that you can find places like this in L.A.

KNOCKED OUT.

Ben and I trekked out to Pomona last night, an hour outside of Los Angeles, to attend Mac Miller‘s show at the Glass House.  We figured it was better this way, much better than watching Mac at the Troubadour show in LA Friday night… shows in the city of Los Angeles aren’t the best if you’re coming at it crowd-wise. It’s typically all record execs and A&Rs looking for a scoop.  Glass House shows are ideal: Real kids, real fans.

We were halfway through opener Casey Veggies‘ set when Ben got an emergency phone call from a friend in dire straits.  15 minutes before Mac was to take the stage, we had to bounce and book it back home to LA.  What a bummer, we’d both been looking to see Mac headline this show for months.

I was all set up to take photos of the performance as well, and relay the experience back to you.  Unfortunately, I have nothing to show for our hours-long mission… but the least I can do is leave you with his “Knock, Knock” video.  Sorry guys, until next time!

BUZZ.

This is how it works. A major motion picture studio has to promote its new project in time for opening weekend. So it constructs prop replica automobiles inspired by the film and plants them around the city.  Passers-by take photographs and send phone-pix to their friends, who in turn tell their friends about the movie tie-in. Bloggers also do their part and gather material for their website, taking pictures of the aforementioned car and blasting it to their audience.  And as a result, you read about it and convince yourself that you want to go watch The Green Hornet this weekend.  Great success.

Ashley came at us last week, frothing at the mouth about a new burrito restaurant opening up by USC.  It’s called FREEBIRDS and it’s actually nothing new at all.  It’s been huge in Texas for decades, but actually originated up in Santa Barbara in 1987.  So this is their California homecoming of sorts, and only the third location outside of Texas.  To be honest, I hadn’t heard about it ’til Ashley brought it up, but judging by the hours-long line that serpentined around the block today on opening day, the helicopter overhead, and the honking traffic and radio stations promo’ing out front, apparently I was the last one to know about FREEBIRDS.

This is Libby, the FREEBIRDS mascot.  As the marketing director told us, her skirt’s hiked up, just like how they’ve always liked it.

Libby makes an appearance at every Freebirds location, and here in LA, she greets you at the entrance.

FREEBIRDS has a very hippy-oriented, communal vibe.  It has that Texan charm with an SF twist.  The music’s just loud enough to make you yell a little bit, the energy is positive through and through.  By the time you leave this place, you’re a little winded.. it’s a mild college party up in da club.

And that’s partially maintained by the staff alone.  There’s always a smile there to greet you, get you a drink while you wait in line, and educate you on the FREEBIRDS story.

One of my favorite parts about FREEBIRDS is that there are no uniforms. You’re allowed to wear whatever you want.. and look at how much fun these kids are having making burritos. Like Lucy in the chocolate assembly line…

They have these little foil creatures creeping all over the place. That one, I have NO idea about.

Oh! You’re from The Hundreds?! Take my picture!

There are great salads and quesadillas here, all kinds of tasty eats.. but yes, it’s really about the burrito.  Ben egged me on to get a Super Monster, but I want to stay alive. So I went with the original, the Freebird.

I can already hear the Chipotle comparisons, but keep those to yourself.  Sorry, but FREEBIRDS trumps Chipotle with the material selection alone. EVERYTHING is made onsite, from scratch. Nothing’s shipped in or pre-packaged. All fresh ingredients, made right here.

And what about all the different options? There are 2.2 trillion different burrito combinations you can try.. I’m gonna start with just one.

A spinach tortilla. A little cilantro-lime rice with monterey jack cheese.

Fresh grass-fed steak.

Mixed vegetables and a helping of queso sauce on top can’t hurt.

Sour cream (I passed on the guacamole). There are a bazillion other condiments to drench your piece with. Don’t remember what I went with here.

How’d I do?

I almost forgot the best part.  FREEBIRDS’ signature POT BROWNIES.  So good they should be illegal.

Even more stuff I don’t know what to do with.

There’s a proper way to do this.. unwrapping your FREEBIRDS burrito.  Pop the cork on top and unravel the foil from there.  One last thing, FREEBIRDS are known for staying open late.. like the ones in Texas stay open til 3am, the one in Santa Barbara is 24 hours.. This one at USC is open ’til like 1 or 1:30 in the morning.  But I think tonight they’re open ’til 3 also.  Whatever, I may go back for dinner.

MAKING THE CUT.

#, #

So let me start this off by saying how much we love Colorado.  Aside from touch-n-go on the airport runway, I’ve actually never stepped foot in Denver and the surrounding counties, but just a few days here have left me wanting more.  The people are genuinely friendly, delicious food and thriving culture, and how about the fact that the city’s nestled between a 360 degree expanse of snow-capped mountains?  It’s beautiful out here, and we’ll be back soon.

Our last stop in Colorado was Family Affair in downtown Denver, one of our proud The Hundreds authorized stockists in the midwest.  This is a certified streetwear boutique, stocking the likes of Benny Gold, Naked & Famous, Diamond, Play Cloths, BBC, and UNDFTD.  It’s nice to see that real streetwear stores are still alive and kicking!

I’m not sure why this shot came out so blurry, but let’s just call it artsy for the time being.  Family Affair is actually split between streetwear goods and a barber/styling shop.  The idea here is that instead of treating yourself to a new outfit and getting lined up elsewhere, why not do it all in one place?

Jason works hard at running things here at Family Affair.  We split a couple beers and talked about our parents’ expectations of us as far as careers go.  Instead of following a more secure, set path in life, he chose to pursue his dreams and open his own stores.  And that sense of accomplishment and self-fulfillment are priceless.. more than any paycheck can provide. Agree?

I was playing with Jason’s crazy 10mm death lens, and practiced on Scotty iLL.  Minus some Timbs, he looks yanked straight out of a mid-90s East Coast rap crew.

Oh wait, there was one more spot we hit before jetting out of Denver.  Sushi Sasa on 15th St.

I always get a little wary of eating sushi when we’re thousands of miles away from the ocean (how fresh can it be??) – especially when we’re smack dab in the middle of the country… but Sasa eased my fears.  I’m telling you, Denver’s waaay slept-on… Nothing but good times.
