GIRL POWER.

#

My old friends Kathy and Kaila Yu (Hello Drama / Nylon Pink) treated me to Orochon Ramen for lunch.  We talked about blogging for the most part, how punk rock is that?  What makes a blog successful?  The answer is consistency.  Sounds simple, but it’s the hardest thing to do for most blog upstarts.  The best blogs are reliable, updated regularly, and never skip a beat. The content (unfortunately) comes second. Truth!

The two are discussing concepts on paper..

.. what eventually results in something like this. Here’s a new piece from their jewelry line, it should drop in about a month or so.

Back at the office, I jump right into another meeting, this time with another old friend, only we’ve known each other since we were kids. This is Maria, she’s an established photographer now, there’s a chance you might recognize her for winning VH1′s photography-based reality game show, The Shot.  But you most definitely would recognize her work, umm Victoria’s Secret anybody?

mariahartman_thehundreds3

We talked about the profession of photography, and what that entails nowadays. What was once such a niche industry has become oversaturated and blown out to an immeasurable degree.  Think about it in regards to your own work, your job,… maybe you flip burgers, maybe you’re a bookkeeper. Now imagine if almost everyone around you started doing it also, and could “master” it with a few hundred bucks and a week’s worth of experience, and what that would mean for your prospects of holding onto your clients and customers.

Because of vast digital advances, most notably DSLR’s and Photoshop, everybody’s a photographer these days, many to professional standards.  Maria sees the bright side of that, which is really great: she is encouraging of anyone delving into the art.  On the negative, I can see how this shift severely damages the careers of professional photographers who are legitimately trained and experienced in the practice.  But I also know that just because there are more photographers, doesn’t mean there are more GOOD photographers.  In fact, if anything, a surplus of halfway competitors only refines the public’s eye as to what defines good and bad.  In essence, the more you see of it, the more your taste is trained to distinguish photography that is genuinely and undeniably skilled.  As Maria noted, “the cream rises to the top.” (This is a philosophy that can be applied to any oversaturated market, by the way).

mariahartman_thehundreds1

Maria’s the cream, everybody.  So that’s why we’ve enlisted her resources for the third issue of The Hundreds Magazine.  I love hiring friends, and I love being friends with people who are the best at what they do.  Speaking of The Hundreds Magazine, Maria’s hiding behind Issue #2, which is now available at THLA and THSF.  Here’s her best Joy Bryant impression:

LOLA OUT LOUD.

#

I’m up at my friend Lola‘s house, right over the hill. It’s not where you’d expect to find the visionary young artist, in a neighborhood cascading with white picket fences and swimming pools.  But she’s the sore thumb in a sea of fingers here,.. upon approaching her doorstep you can just feel the energy reverberating around her home studio. Something incredible is happening inside.

lola_thehundreds9

It’s not even so much a studio as a ’70s living room, dilapidated cocktail bar, shag carpet, the only thing we’re missing is Burt Reynolds’ mustache.  But this is where Lola finds her space to paint some of the most involved and fantastical work currently emanating from the contemporary art scene.

lola_thehundreds11

Here is one of Lola’s older pieces, I want you to note the centerpiece, her recurring character. What is it?  It’s not so much about the identity, as the emotion and mood.  Lola expresses herself through that figure, and it carries throughout the rest of the piece.  You might also be drawn to the intricate frame. That’s very Lola…

lola_thehundreds4

Half of the work is just finding these frames, as they provide the springboard for the artwork.  Lola takes cues from the ornate frame to direct the painting that transpires.  Here are some stories that are just waiting to be told…

And here, your first look at some new paintings, still unfinished.

These are the types of paintings that can speak to you for decades, the detail goes forever.

Over on her desk, Lola’s sketching out some wallpaper patterns.  It’s for her upcoming solo show IPSUM FACTUM (where you can see the above works in all their entirety, plus a slew of others) opening this Saturday night, March 27th, at the Corey Helford Gallery.

Back to work… Lola’s got a busy week ahead of finishing touches.

See you Saturday night. Yes, you’re all invited.

The City of Angels is more the city of angles.

Dinner with Dave Choe (center), Nikki, Jason, and Joe at Curry House in Little Tokyo.  Dave’s been busy preparing for his solo show in 3 weeks, hanging out with Die Antwoord and building his man-child factory downtown, that’s like Tom Hanks’ loft in BIG, except times 100. Anyways, you’ve probably seen the posters for his show around town, you know you have.

GEE WILLY!

Willy Santos is a skateboarding icon. I used to love him just for the fact that he was holding it down for Asian skateboarders worldwide.  Especially when I used to live down in Mira Mesa, he was like the Mayor of San Diego.  I remember KAFE, Kuts And Fades, Etc., where his dad would cut hair inside the skate shop.  Anyways, Willy, as you may know, helms Willy’s Workshop, one of The Hundreds’ premiere accounts in SD.  Stop by and give him a high-five just for being genuinely awesome.

KEEP GOIN’.

#

On Sunday, The Hundreds’ team rider Mike “Owen” Franklin suffered a devastating motorcycle accident near his home.  If you follow The Hundreds, you are well familiar with Owen.  From his days freestyling in our old Rosewood office to becoming one of the skate universe’s most psychotically mesmerizing skateboarders.. He’s coming out of an induced coma this morning in the ICU, after having endured multiple surgeries, including for fractures in his neck, and his leg is entirely shot as of the moment.  If you’re in the Santa Clarita area tonight, Push Skate Shop is hosting a Skate Jam and Prayer Circle for him at the Santa Clarita Valley Skatepark starting at 7:30pm.  You can check out more about it on the World Industries blog.  You can also keep up with his progress through a Twitter his girlfriend set up for him HERE.

Keep goin’ Owen, we all need you homey. Skateboarding needs you!
