BOWLED OVER.

Another early Sunday morning at the Rose Bowl Flea Market.  It’s good to get here at the crack of dawn and just zone out before the crowds and heat pour in later in the morning.

Looks like I’m not the only one here.  Darren Romanelli caught me off guard while I was searching through a binder of old botanical illustrations.  The Doctor’s always got some awesome new project he’s working on, makes me feel lazy, but also keeps me on my toes.

LONG LIVE MCQUEEN.

Thank you for skulls, discussion on Darwinism through fashion, and theatricality.

When you see a woman wearing McQueen, there’s a certain hardness to the clothes that makes her look powerful. It kind of fends people off. You have to have a lot of balls to talk to a woman wearing my clothes.”

Some of my favorite McQueen work was his accomplishments with Bjork.  Notably, her Homogenic cover and the video for Alarm Call:

ELECTRIC BOOGALOO.

tesla_thehundreds2

…Onto the next one.

tesla_thehundreds3

I visited my friend Ben today deep in the valley.  This Tesla is his.. a fully electric car.  Speaking of which, have you ever seen the film, Who Killed the Electric Car? You can catch the entire thing on Youtube actually.  Watch that one and Food, Inc. and you’ll be burning flags and effigies of politicans by nightfall.

tesla_thehundreds4

So yeah, back from the dead. The electric car.  There’s the battery pack in the trunk actually.  Ben says he barely uses half of it by the time he plugs it back in at night in his garage.

tesla_thehundreds5

Performance? This thing goes 0-60 in mere seconds.  Watch:

Oh yeah, you get to use the Carpool Lane also.  Zero emissions. Alright, so we never got the flying cars, but this is second best.

THE FOUNDATION.

Lucky and I posted up for a bit at DJ Muggs‘ studio earlier this afternoon.  This is ground zero, folks.. where it all goes down.  Rome (Sublime’s new singer) was upstairs recording, I mean dudes were laying tracks all over the compound.  It’s a beehive of creative energy.

getdown_thehundreds2

There’s Muggs in the center.  The man’s responsible for more jams than Knott’s Berry Farm.  Not only did he produce House of Pain’s “Jump Around” and Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self,” he’s Cypress Hill’s DJ and Producer.

getdown_thehundreds6

Speakin’ of Cypress, they just wrapped up a new album, so look out for that one.  Here’s their new video, “It Ain’t Nothin’,” which just premiered today:

All those clothes piled up are under Muggs’ brand and label, Soul Assassins.

getdown_thehundreds9

Funny, I’ve been listening to the Judgment Night soundtrack all week.  The Pearl Jam / Cypress Hill “Real Thing” track is on REPEAT right now.  Does anyone even remember the actual Judgment Night movie?!

getdown_thehundreds7

There’s the studio where Muggs’ live radio show broadcasts, airing Monday nights on Shade45.

Big Lucks, a window to the past.  Estevan shot that photo of Lucky years back.

Then we headed back downtown to visit Everlast (House of Pain / Whitey Ford / La Coka Nostra) at his studio.  Oh but first, had to help him carry in a nice package from his buddy Brian, aka Kaws.

getdown_thehundreds10

Everlast has done pretty well for himself as well.  Yeah, I’d say…

getdown_thehundreds11

Chopping up some salad, and chopping up some stories.. mainly about Everlast’s heckling history at Staples Center Lakers games.  With that booming voice, and some of the jokes he’d crack off at the rival teams’ expense, he was the Lakers’ secret weapon during the Shaq years.

getdown_thehundreds12

So, what’s up with that table?

Everlast’s homey DJ Lethal used to own Tupac’s old house.  And in the back where they kept the dogs, Tupac and the Outlawz had scribed MAKAVELI into the fresh cement.  So when Lethal moved out, he took the ground with him and they turned it into the world’s most awesome coffee table ever.

SOMEWHERE.

Rainbows are one of life’s greatest lessons.  The sheer metaphor of ephemerality and beauty is instructive, especially when nature comes together for that moment after a thunderous storm.  Just for that moment though.  I shot these photographs on our rooftop within a matter of minutes.  And then it was over.

PULP NON-FICTION.

Were you ever mesmerized by those novelty gag-gift ads at the back of your comic book.. the ones popularized by Johnson Smith Company, showcasing all kinds of random odds and ends that were everything you wanted, but nothing you actually needed?  Fake dog doo-doo, hand buzzers, book safes.. whenever they came in the mail, the quality was such a huge disappointment.  I remember obsessing over the advertised hovercraft, sending in a few bucks and waiting 4 months for a red plastic plate with an attached motorized fan to finally come in the mail.  Of course, the battery lasted 10 minutes.

Anyways, this is our tribute to the classic back-page ads from the good ol’ days, the PULP tee.  Yeah, we had a little fun with this one. (Available NOW in our ONLINE SHOP.  Also heads up, our Spring accessories and New Eras hit THLA and THSF this Thursday morning).

SWORDFIGHT.

This is not a hate post.

starwars

…But it is a critique.

I understand the power of collaboration projects between brands.  I can attest to the marketing factor, the cross-promotional exposure for both parties involved, and the creative possibilities that can arise from such endeavors.  But forgive me if I don’t understand the recent Star Wars x Adidas collaboration that is now on shelves at an Adidas Originals retailer near you.  A Darth Vader-inspired runner?  Death Star shelltoes?  What’s the directive here?

Don’t get me wrong, I think the product is very well-executed from a design standpoint.  And having discussed this with industry sources, I have a decent understanding of how the entire project came to fruition, and that it’s been a years-long process.  Furthermore, I understand that the campaign’s overall sales and publicity impact have actually performed rather well, so it’s not as if my opinion really matters here.  Seems like both Adidas and Star Wars got what they wanted out of it.

But it bothers me that there’s no substantive conceptual basis for this collaboration, unless I’m missing the point (as usual).  Is Star Wars promoting a new Blu-Ray pack?  Does Adidas’ brand history somehow coincide with the Star Wars legacy?  Are Mark Hamill’s favorite sneakers Adidas hi-tops?  Coming from a bigger Star Wars fanatic than your Uncle Zeke, I’m sorry, but is Star Wars culturally relevant in 2010?  I mean, a Star TREK collaboration would be a better fit at this juncture, wouldn’t it?

Or did this all come together just.. *gasp*.. because??

It all funnels down to “Why?”  You may argue that I’m talking about it, and that’s the point.  But if Adidas collaborated with Banksy in making invisible sneakers, it’d draw a more profound response, wouldn’t it?  C’mon, if Adidas worked with Charlie Sheen on boxing gloves, we’d all be talking about it.  When you’re ADIDAS, you have your pick of the litter (as made evident through Adidas’ O by O program), so out of all the cool-pertinent partners to align themselves with on a project of this magnitude, why Star Wars and why now?  Addict teamed up with Star Wars.. 2 years ago.  Bill McMullen and Span of Sunset did the O.G. Adidas x Star Wars collab (the AD-AT) 6 years ago!  Where were the 3 stripes then?

adat

And as for Star Wars…  Wouldn’t it suit Lucas’ crew better to saddle up with partners that can actually provide a more logical connection?  Yes I have all the problems and zero solutions, but what about Stormtrooper protective helmets with cool Japanese motorcycle/skate/fixed companies?  What about Jedi burlap hoodies with streetwear brands that actually nerd out on Star Wars?

I’m just sayin’… Since this is my blog and I can tell you what I like, I can also tell you what I dislike.  And what I like are collaboration projects that make sense all around.  For example, Stussy x Ricoh (jives with the lifestyle), Original Fake x Wonderwall (Kaws’ favorite interior design firm, plus did his shop), Tokidoki x Yogurtland (same niche demographic), Kid Cudi x A Bathing Ape (he used to work there), Nick Hornby x Ben Folds (pretty much just awesome in general), dude even Gaga x Elton John (you know why).

Maybe somebody can fill me in, and I’ll stand corrected. Annnyways, here’s the raddest picture on the internet:
