MY FAVORITE PHOTOS OF 2009 (HORIZONTAL)

#

Here are my favorite *horizontal photographs that I shot throughout this past year:

On the streets of Tokyo back in January.  Japan’s weird because it’ll be 20 degrees outside in the winter, but indoors they’ll crank the heaters up to triple digits.  I was suffocating inside BEAMS, so I stepped out on the pavement and spotted this kid pushing back and forth on his skateboard.  He’s wearing a Zephyr hat.  I live less than 10 minutes from where the original Zephyr shop stood in Dogtown, yet this kid’s halfway across the world mimicking the Z-Boys.  I think that’s a testament to the universal language of skateboarding.

Michael Jackson’s funeral was a field day to shoot at.  But the photograph that evoked the biggest response from you guys was this one.  I was shooting through the bustling crowd and caught this girl’s stare in the moment.  A half-second later, it would have been a different shot.  The contrast in brights and darks suited post-processing in black and white.  She’s mysterious, ephemeral, half-knowing, all-captivating.  Kinda like an Asian Mona Lisa.

Alex moved to New York, so the last time Ben and I were there, he came to visit us.  We sat on a sidewalk stoop for an hour or so, people watching and catching up on his young life and the debauchery involved.  The entire time he was fiddling with his pocket knife and I wanted to capture that attitude.  It’s in his hands, how he wears his clothes, fabric and metal.  As I noted in the original blog post, it reminds me of Bad Religion’s 80-85, which is one of the first albums I had as a teenager.  It’s nice to know that rebellion is still alive and kicking.

best2009_thehundreds13

Over the summer, I shot a Linkin Park show at an all-day music festival, and this one photograph encapsulates the entire experience… The sun setting on unbridled adolescence, it’s as if they’re all on a rollercoaster ride.  These kids are happy, excited, they’re here to celebrate music.  It’s very pure.

best2009_thehundreds10

We were shooting the Winter ’09 lookbook for The Hundreds Magazine‘s premiere issue out in San Francisco’s sketchy Tenderloin district.  In the midst of it all, this guy walked up with a bucket and inside, was his little friend. And by little, I mean GIGANTIC RAT.  Anyways, sometimes they’re good photographs, and sometimes it’s just some crazy content.  This time, it’s probably that.

best2009_thehundreds17

I forgot when exactly I shot this in New York, but it turned into one of my favorite shots of the year.  This is also one of those instances where the post-process editing actually helped to dramatically alter the mood of the shoot.  The girls appear to be at a literal crossroads, with arrows and lines going in all different directions.  As you may know by now, I’m naturally inclined towards angles, and this photograph is chock full of ‘em.

best2009_thehundreds7

We decided to test out some print advertisements in magazines over the latter part of the year, and what that meant was I had to shoot an impromptu campaign.  So I took Boss up to this amazing props warehouse in Hollywood.  It’s like 3 Costcos filled with every movie prop your heart desires.  A room full of purple fire hydrants, a hallway of vintage cracked baththubs, a closet with old-timey elixir bottles.  This was our favorite room to shoot in, the Mannequins.  Boss is a character and loves his facial expressions, but for a few seconds, I caught him just taking it all in. And that was the shot we went with.

best2009_thehundreds6

This was just a couple weeks back, when we were in San Francisco, you probably remember it.  We were cleaning up after our Warehouse Sale when I caught these 2 brothers across the street. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they’re twins.  This shot is so SF to me, with the trolley car along rain-slicked streets, the Chinese boys offering peace fingers and ping-pong paddles.  They were good sports about the whole thing and were friendly enough to bust a quick pose before running off to table tennis.

best2009_thehundreds11

I have a lot of family in Maui, so once a year I’m out there to eat Da Kitchen and sit around bonfires. This is quite possibly my favorite location in the world:  Big Beach out in Makena.  On this afternoon, I was lackadaisically shooting the ocean when Cameron ran out of nowhere and started popping off all kinds of tricks.  He and his homey were eager to show off for the camera, talking about sponsorship and free gear.  Local kids in Maui are good kids, but can get caught up in all kinds of trouble because there’s not much else to do on the island.

best2009_thehundreds4

It was a big year for Rick Klotz and his longstanding L.A. brand, Freshjive.  A few months back, Klotz announced that Jive would no longer be associated with any logos, which fast became a topic of discussion from streetwear blogs to national newspapers.  Anyways, I wrote about it myself and asked Rick if I could shoot him for the accompanying piece.  I’ve shot Rick a few times before at his downtown Los Angeles factory but this time he agreed to do so ONLY if I kept the shots serious and emphatic.

You rarely see this anymore in youth fashion: actual reams of fabric and patternmaking.  I like this shot because years from now, this is how I want to remember the independent apparel game.

best2009_thehundreds9

Out of all that DeLorean bloggery I bothered you with, this was probably my favorite shot from the DMC headquarters in Humble, Texas.  I rarely shoot with my fisheye lens anymore, it doesn’t quite fit the aesthetic I want to get across.  But this time it really worked.  The DeLorean is such a unique-looking automobile that any shot of one will catch your eye.  But distorted like this, as if reflected in a mirror, gives off a retro-futuristic space-pod vibe.  I dunno.

Hong Kong. I can post a million photographs from Hong Kong.  The streets are alive and Blade Runner-esque.  So many different kinds of people and environmental stimuli.  I wanted to capture those colors and the intensity of it all.  It’s a really busy shot, but this girl is the centerpiece, the centrifuge of the chaos.

best2009_thehundreds5

Aside from Jon and Kate, what more did America talk about this year than the Economy?  Streetwear and The Hundreds wasn’t safe from it either.  Earlier this year, I posted a harbinger of things to come for our industry.  By the close of ’09, many of you have seen the ramifications.  Over the months, Ben and I had multiple meetings downstairs in our showroom on how to bolster our business in this downward economy.  One day, I looked up and noticed that one of our sample racks was stripped; a mere skeleton of a healthy product range.  It tied everything up succinctly.

STAFF ONLY.

We shut down El Carmen tonight for our annual staff Holiday Party.  I always love this bar, the Mexican luchador-themed haven reminds me of something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie.  Can’t believe it’s the end of the decade.

LEMME PUT YOU ON THE GAME.

Black Wall Street meets Wall Street, home of The Hundreds HeadQuarters.  The Game and I talking about fashion and snowboarding.  He’s been down with The Hundreds for years, so don’t be surprised to see him here. The Game’s also an avid rider, I’ve yet to go up this season, but hopefully we fix that soon.  The Game in the Bunyan jacket: Red, of course.

The Game rolls deep, all family. Stix’s been by his side for decades.  That’s a good look for Adam Bomb:

SKATEBOARDING. FOREVER.

#

Earlier today, Scotty, Ben and I had a literal roundtable with Salman Agah and Steve Berra from The Berrics.  We talked some biz, but what we really discussed was Skateboarding.

I like to capitalize the “S” in “Skateboarding” because I think it deserves it.  It’s like our collective grandfather that gave us life and showed us the world, I think it earns the respect.

I’m still not sure if it’s a sport, as most of the mainstream tends to categorize Skateboarding now.  To me, Skateboarding was always more about the culture than actually mastering an inward heelflip.  I was never the best at Skateboarding, but I got by. I had my go-to tricks, I’m still better at certain switch tricks than doing ‘em regular.  Berra remarked that that’s the general truth across skateboarders.  Most of ‘em really aren’t that good, but they stick around because they can connect with the lifestyle and culture around Skateboarding.  Which is a mentality that I was familiar with, growing up in late ’80s and ’90s skate.. but for the most part, has lost its essence.  You see it, the 14-year-old kids who can huck themselves off a 20-stair, but don’t got soul, or attitude, or style, or appreciation of any of that.  At it’s core, Skateboarding is about skateboarding.  But that’s the core, what about the rest of the apple?

What happened to Skateboarding’s marriage to the creative community?  …The intellectual, driven, passionate rebels who drew their own graphics, and were drawn to Skateboarding as a means to express themselves as Creatives, not because they were striving to be a technically proficient athlete?  And what happened to pure Skateboarding companies and brands, and shops for that matter?  Did Nike save skateboarding or did they have a hand in dismantling it?  All I know is I grew up in an era where Skateboarding and the Swoosh couldn’t be on more opposite ends of the spectrum.  Now, they are undeniably one and the same.

Skateboarding, as I always understood it, was about the grassroots guys with irreverence and ingenuity.  The ones who were innovative and driven enough to Do-It-Themselves and push Skateboarding forward.  These days, the skateboard industry (the very idea of a skateboard industry is odd) is a well-oiled machine, systematic, programmed for profit.  Robotic.  And predictable.

berrics_thehundreds2

Anyways, that’s the gist of what we talked about.  Breathing new life into Skateboarding, inciting a renaissance of sorts, and reclaiming.  The Berrics, in my opinion, are doing this.  It’ll be exciting to see where Skateboarding goes from here.

FIGURES.

Tomorrow morning at both THLA and THSF, The Hundreds will unveil its exclusive colorway of Michael Lau’s vinyl figure rendition of Adam Bomb.  Lau is widely heralded as the pioneer of collectable vinyl figure art, especially in regards to street culture crossover.  To have Lau offer his craftsmanship to our famed logo is an honor, to say the least.  Let alone for the 10th Anniversary of his Gardener project.

Only 200 of the Michael Lau x The Hundreds figures were produced by Mindstyle Toys.  We are also offering a black and a white colorway of a t-shirt to commemorate the release:

TALES FROM THE SALE.

#, #, #

Here are some final stories from this past weekend’s The Hundreds Warehouse Sale here in LA.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds13

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds23

You remember the “OMG YOU WERE BORN IN THE ’90s?!” game we started at the SF Warehouse Sale?  Well, the game continued here in LA and this girl was by far the clear-cut winner:

These guys had the illest style of all.  I told ‘em we definitely need more customers like them. Thrashin’:

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds21

Dude on the right (with his bro and sis) parked in my space, then had the nerve to call me out on Twitter for blocking him in! But it’s the Holidays, all is forgiven.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds7

Plenty girls at the sale.  If they were by themselves, most were shopping for brothers or boyfriends.  Like the girl on the left, her man’s been in Afghanistan for the past year and is about to come home for the Holidays.  So she’ll take care of him with some TH gear and reload him with some kicks since he’s a sneakerhead.

She said the hardest thing she’s ever had to do was saying goodbye to him before he left.  He’s already suffered an explosion, flying 8 feet in the air, hospitalized, then right back into action.  Props to him and all our soldiers fighting valiantly abroad. Come home safely!

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds27

Not ALL the girls were shopping for others though. These 2 were here by themselves, shopping for.. THEMSELVES.  Considering we don’t make any women’s apparel, that was cool.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds18

I asked almost everyone where they came in from.  San Diego, Miami, Santa Barbara,… this girl’s answer: “Over there” and pointed at the entrance. Awesome.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds22

We were bumping TH music the entire weekend: Pac Div, Alex Spit, Dom Kennedy, Morrissey…  At one point, Nas was on the speakers and I asked everyone who it was. Nobody had a clue, except 1 dude at the back of the line. That was a little disheartening.

But these K-town locals knew what was up. The one in the middle said he’s an aspiring rapper so I asked him who his favorite emcees were, half-expecting to hear Kanye West or Wale, you know, the usual.  But he said “Dr. Dre,” then proceeded to tell me why nobody beats Dre and how he can’t wait for “Detox.”  I’ve always felt that my generation was the last to experience real music and fashion, but also thought I was just being the bitter old guy for claiming that.  But these guys all confirmed that their era’s culture sucks: “You guys had the best music and clothes.”

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds10

I don’t remember any good stories from these guys, but that sweatshirt reminds me, support the Keep A Breast foundation!

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds9

I love seeing vintage TH.  Lots of kids said they’ve been down with The Hundreds forever, but could only name pieces from a year or 2 back.  This sweatshirt was the first time that Adam Bomb was ever used on a piece of The Hundreds clothing. His response: “For life!”

See you all next year.

PATTERNMAKING.

#, #

I made a lot of friends this weekend at The Hundreds LA Warehouse Sale.  That’s one of the best parts about events like these. It gives us a chance to meet you, the customer, and hear your feedback and TH stories.

This crew was one of the many that camped out overnight on our street to get in.  They said it was well worth it, which I still don’t quite get.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds34

These guys came in from the Valley.  She says she visits the website regularly for The Photo Booth.  I asked if they were together and she said the guy in the middle was her brother.  Awkward.  I hate when I do that.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds20

My man in the middle waited hours in line with his homeys, but wasn’t planning on getting anything.  He was pretty adamantly against it, actually.  Too cool for The Hundreds, I get it.  I bet if we put The Strokes on a t-shirt, he’d be interested.

I told the dude on the left he looks like he traveled from the ’70s to get here.  P.S. That’s not Chromeo.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds17

There were plenty of other sample/warehouse sales this weekend. These girls came from the Hellz sale right down the street.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds15

Where’s Madam Bomb been at?

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds29

Most of you TH experts know that we put out New Era samples and prototypes at these Warehouse Sales every year.  Here are 2 of the much coveted RSWD/POST sample New Eras that sold.. these are 1 of 1s, you won’t find them anywhere else in the world. Ever.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds30

Watch out behind you dude, Purple Switch has got that shifty eye going.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds2

Sami, in the middle there with the white hat, was filming the entire day. She’s a budding videographer, and in the middle of setting up her Youtube page HERE.  It’s very inspiring to see young people finding their creative niche.  One day, you’ll see her onstage accepting that Oscar and I’ll be that guy on the couch telling all his loser friends “Hey I knew her before she became famous.”  Then I will eat 3 ding-dongs and fall asleep in the bathtub.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds28

Toy dogs are fun ‘cuz you can bring ‘em with you to events like these.  That’s about all they’re good for though. Juuuuuust kidding.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds33

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds26

These two came all the way from Las Vegas, by way of Texas, and were some of the last ones to squeeze into the sale on Sunday night. They’re both in school for Fashion and are gonna end up out in LA hopefully at some point.  Did you spot her dog?

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds14

Some Korean kids at the sale, these ones from Fullerton. Somehow they always know my little brother. They all look like my little brother also. Because, like I said, they’re Korean.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds25

You can always tell when Ben is Tweeting, tryin’ to be all slick.  Like when a fat kid steals cake and eats it in the corner.  Lil’ Mike has the worst Twitter ever. Lil’ Mike is the worst ever, period.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds8

So many couples, ton of supportive girlfriends who were down for the cause and dig through boxes.  These guys came from Long Beach and put in WORK.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds4

These are 2 of my new friends. When the TH DeLorean was at the shop, she came by herself on opening morning to take photos of it for her boyfriend, since he was working. They actually both work at the 99cent store and are loyal TH fiends.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds32

This couple came ALL the way from the future.  Apparently The Hundreds is bigtime in the year 3000. And I sleep in a bathtub.

“How did you come up with ‘The Hundreds?’”  ”What does ‘The Hundreds‘ mean?”

THIS is it.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds35

This past weekend, we hosted our annual LA Warehouse Sale. Considering people camped out on the rainy streets of downtown Los Angeles each night of the sale, and that the average wait time in line throughout the days was about 5-7 hours or so, AND almost everyone said it was well worth all the trouble,… yeah, I’d consider it a success.

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds3

People came from all over to be at the Sale and pick up quality TH product for marked-down prices, including extremely limited prototypes and samples that were never produced.  That meant plenty of 1-of-1 pieces, jackets, denim, RSWD and POST New Era hats…

lawarehouse_2009thehundreds6

Thank you to everyone who endured the rain and for being patient. You should all start lining up NOW for next year’s sale…
