COME TOGETHER.

#

So as I was saying Friday, tonight VIVA LA ART hosted a charity art auction in Santa Monica to a pretty substantial turnout.  Overall, VIVA LA ART raised over $13,000 for the Children’s Law Center, which is almost as much as a used DeLorean off eBay.  Which gives me an idea…. hmmm….

These are my old friends Eddie and Jennifer, who were instrumental in putting the benefit party together.

Here’s one of my favorites, Stacey Aoyama‘s piece:

I was pleased to see an Audrey Kawasaki work on display.  By the end of the night, it flipped for about 500 bones.

vivalaart_thehundreds5

The one in the middle is by the incomparable Seonna Hong. She’s rad.

vivalaart_thehundreds4

MR44 (Foreign Family)’s submission. Huge! Reminded me of a rain-soaked street’s reflection of city lights.

vivalaart_thehundreds3

And this was my entry.  I usually like to paint characters, directed around a subject, nothing so abstract, but I wanted to submit something JAGS-oriented for those who might be interested in seeing something TH-related.  The piece is about movement and tension, and I wanted to use the canvas’ original dirty white as the base color, so that any white on top of it had a tonal pop. Anyways, I can go on and on but whatever, that’s it.  I heard it went for about $500 also.  Which means I could sell like 26 of these and get a used DeLorean off eBay.

ANIMATED TGIF.

Fridays are always appreciated around these parts. Keith and Hanni from HUF, Ray and Pat from Mighty Healthy, and Mike from Foundation, all ended up here this afternoon to talk shop. Literally/figuratively.

Afterwards, they all headed to The Berrics, but I think Ray went off clam digging.

VIVA LA ART!

Not too long ago, my good friend Eddie told me about a great cause he was working towards with some friends, an organization to benefit the needy L.A. community through the arts.  That idea turned into VIVA LA ART!, and their first event is tomorrow (Saturday) night in Santa Monica, a silent art auction with 25+ pieces from L.A.-based artists.

100% of the proceeds of this event benefit Children’s Law Center of Los Angeles (CLC). CLC is a public interest law firm that represents almost 100% of the 25,000 foster children in LA County. These children are part of the foster system because they have faced either physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, or abandonment.”

Please come out and support the cause.  For the children:

AGENDA TRADE SHOW. PERIOD.

#

I haven’t been to an industry tradeshow in a minute.. Maybe in over a year?  But when Aaron told us he was moving his AGENDA Show to Huntington Beach, and that it was promising to be one of the best tradeshows the street/skate market had ever seen, I had to see what all the hoopla was about.

And right from the get-go, I found some hoopla.

agenda2009_thehundreds20

Then you realize that the show is literally across from the beach. HOOPLA.

agenda2009_thehundreds15

This tradeshow has grown organically over the years, targeting the right brands to exhibit, along with the right buyers to invite. It makes for a clean, professional show for both sides. As opposed to every other tradeshow that doesn’t understand the market well enough to create an evenly matched environment.  And that’s why Scotty, our Sales Manager, has said this show has set the benchmark for all other tradeshows catering to our culture, and why this week has personally been one of our most successful shows to date.  And Scotty hates everything and everybody on planet Earth, just so you can appreciate the gravity of his remarks.

I just think it’s rad how Aaron still incorporates good art into the show’s DNA.

The Brothers Ternosky.  DJ Pubes, Mike T., oops and that’s Don’s back, over at OBEY.

agenda2009_thehundreds14

On the ride back from Orange County, Ben and I were talking about how awesome it’s been to be around for 6 years and make so many good friends, and seen their growth (both physically, for some, but mostly, brand and business-wise).  Amir’s magazine BEAUTIFUL/DECAY has dropped all of its advertising. There are only 1500 issues printed, and each cover is HAND DRAWN.

agenda2009_thehundreds5

Eddie used to intern for The Hundreds. And then Una took him to help with KEEP.  I’d call that an.. UPGRADE.

agenda2009_thehundreds2

Sammy.  It’s really bizarre to see our New York brother in the heart of Orange County.  It’d be the same as a bro’d out surf rat driving up to the Bowery in his white pickup truck with a VIPER bumper sticker.  Actually, this is still waaay weirder.

It’s hard not to like this guy.  That’s why Tal (DCMA) is your new best friend.

agenda2009_thehundreds10

Some of the big news coming out of DC is a flat-black fixed gear with SE.  Ray (Mighty Healthy) loves it.  And Everybody Loves Ray. So you love it too.

agenda2009_thehundreds7

Mega (Black Scale)’s got some really big things up his sleeve… notwithstanding that Agenda wristband (which racked up free beer all day).

agenda2009_thehundreds9

Wackest brand at the show. You don’t wanna see anything in there.

agenda2009_thehundreds18

Aaron Levant, the mastermind behind Agenda Show.  Still a young dude, in his early 20s.. I’ve told this story before, but Agenda was the very first tradeshow we ever exhibited at, maybe 5 years ago.  It was just a handful of brands at the time, maybe 25 or so, and I’d say 20 of them don’t exist anymore.  In that short timeframe, he managed to up-end the tradeshow circuit, and in many ways, the culture, industry, and trends driving it.  Congratulations Aaron.  Now go take your vacation.

ZOM ZOM ZOM.

This past weekend, Holland hosted Europe’s biggest skate contest, the VANS Rotterdam Grand Prix of Skateboarding.  The Hundreds team rider TIM ZOM won the entire contest, taking home a solid 10 grand.  Did I mention he also won Best Trick??

Even the Wall Street Journal couldn’t ignore the news, and posted the following shot of Tim laying into the rail.

CHOE & TELL.

#

I’m sure Dave‘s getting tired of all my hackneyed blog titles now, bastardizing his surname with reckless abandon. “Choetime,” “The Choe Show,” but this one really was so apropos.  He kept the creative side of the offices enraptured this afternoon with sordid tales of debauchery from his recent exploits Far East.  You don’t wanna know… something about hot/cold, between the toes, I dunno… something or other.

Dave’s making his first appearance in 5 years at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.  He’ll be signing his limited edition Giant Robot skateboard decks at the Giant Robot booth.  Read more about the decks and how he hangs out with the 25-year-old founder of Facebook in his Lincoln droptop HERE.

MAYBE ONE OF THE BEST E-MAILS I’VE EVER GOTTEN.

#

Bobby,

I remember when you blogged about immigration and the pictures of them protesting to be heard, till this day the sickest post to date.  Not only because I’m a HUGE The Hundreds fan but because I’m also an immigrant with no papers.  So to have someone like you post about something that has to do with me meant a lot, so I thank you.

To make my story short, I’m just a Peruvian kid that came to the States (Miami) when I was 12 years old, went to school, college, and a job just like any other normal kid.  But recently, Immigration told me that I can’t stay here because, even though I have never commited a single crime just by being here, and tried to be as normal as I can be, It’s somehow not good enough so they tell me that I can’t stay here and I must go back to Peru. What do you do? Fuck it, that’s life, we keep going.  I just wanted to take the time to thank you, since late ’06 I started buying The Hundreds.  Now in 09′ I come to find my closet with nothing but your brand and I couldn’t be happier.  Thanks to your vision as a designer, you helped kids like myself express themselves with clothing. Now I’m ready to show Peru what The Hundreds are all about…. THANKS BOBBY AND BEST OF LUCK!  The Hundreds has a true fan in Peru if you even plan on expanding the brand.

LOS CIENTOS FIRME POR VIDA!

A LITTLE ONE FROM AMSTERDAM.

#

After 6 years of existence, we’ve built relationships with friends the world over.  And Amsterdam is no exception.  The Netherlands’ capitol city is not only home to relaxed legal restrictions, and even looser morals, but 2 of our most dedicated accounts: Benny Komala’s skate boutique Ben G and the top street/skate online retailer in the Netherlands, Freshcotton.

And beginning this weekend, both Ben G and Freshcotton will introduce our first collaboration project together, simply entitled, “XXX.”

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds5

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds6

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds4

The collaboration comes in the form of a hat and a t-shirt. As far as coloration goes, black and red are the traditional Amsterdam colors, and the green underside of the bill is a play on Amsterdam’s “greens” (Heineken and you-know-what). The 3 Xs on the side are taken directly from the 3 Saint Andrew’s Crosses from Amsterdam’s coat-of-arms, but they’re also interpreted by many as the other XXX for which Amsterdam is known.

The tee plays upon the XXX as well. Those who’ve visited Amsterdam may already be familiar with the red-brown bollards that line the streets. Those bollards, or posts, are emblazoned with the three Saint Andrew’s Crosses which are known as “Amsterdammertje,” literally translated as “little one from Amsterdam.”

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds3

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds2

freshcottonbeng_thehundreds1

Most importantly, The Hundreds retailers will NOT be distributing this pack!  The XXX Pack will hit Ben G exclusively on Saturday, July 25th.  Then, on Wednesday, July 29th, Freshcotton.com will begin selling the cap and tee as well.
