WORKS CITED.

We stopped by Ryan McGinness’ new show, RYAN MCGINNESS WORKS, at Deitch Projects’ 18 Wooster Street gallery.  This show’s been running for the past month and closes tomorrow, so if you’re in NYC, I’m giving you 24 hours to get on it.

McGinness’ process is complex and sophisticated. He begins with hand-drawn sketches, which are then vectorized into digital format.  As anyone in the t-shirt business knows, he then translates them into silkscreens, which are hand-screened onto stretched canvas.  Layer after layer, the images build into dynamic collages. What begins as simplistic sketches transforms into a complicated narrative.  Inspired by artists like Pollock and Warhol, you can see why McGinness has impacted the art and design world in his own unique way.

Get lost.

As much as I loved the canvases, I was especially drawn to these 3-dimensional sculptures. Primarily because I don’t know how to work in this medium, let alone even think this way.

And you know me, the darker, black monochromatic works were more striking than their colorful counterparts.

Downstairs was dedicated to blacklight-driven pieces.

We ran into the Hellz Bellz crew at Deitch.  Just to give you some perspective on the enormity of these canvases, there’s Miss Lawn aka Lanie.

NIGHT (RE)CAP.

Last night at the THOMPSON LES, here in New York City…

Just for awesome’s sake, the hotel decided to give us a room right kitty-corner to the 7th floor bar. Which was convenient, considering our old friend Jon (REASON) aka DJ PRICE was on the tables.

3 THINGS.

1. As you already know, we have an arcade downstairs.

2. Last Friday, we had a Street Fighter II Tournament.  I wasn’t there for it. But I guess Nathan Nice won, fair and square.

3. I destroyed Nate after lunch today. With Blanka, even. First try. No cheats.

I just wanted you to know that.

NORTH EAST WEST SOUTH.

I just wanna say that whatever’s going on with Eric Koston’s big move this morning, whether intentional or not, has become quite the publicity firestorm out here.  It’s seemed to have consumed everyone’s wild conjectures and rumormongering, got the entire skate industry gossiping like high school cheerleaders. I also like how there are 5 or 6 “verified” theories swirling around, all being proffered by different people who have all supposedly spoken directly with Koston himself about the matter.  Benny Gold‘s the best, “I heard he’s just gonna skate barefoot.”

I love it.

GOOD NAME. BAD FOOD. WAIT, THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

If you’re in LA, and you check this blog regularly, then chances are you’ve already heard about and/or eaten at Wurstkuche, downtown’s tucked-away gourmet hot dog eatery. (I know, old news).  Aside from the Kogi BBQ truck, Wurstkuche could quite possibly rank as the top hipster haven in the city. At any given time of the day, the sidewalks out front are racked with fixeds, every other patron is taking SLR photos of their food for blog purposes, and there’s really reallly good beer.  Plus, the ambience feels more like an elementary-school multi-purpose room than a restaurant.

This is just one of the countless hot dogs you can manhandle.  Mine, mango jalapeno. Sometimes I go with the chicken apple.  The snobs swear by the rabbit, alligator, or rattlesnake dog.  Wurstkuche also gives you 2 out of 4 toppings to top things off, I just lean towards anything sweet and caramelized.

People also love this place for the fries and wide selection of condiments. Sundried tomato mayo, coconut curry mayo, chipotle aioli to name a few.. I just like the honey mustard that’s already on the table. The fries/dips are good, but personally, I think TRIMANA‘s got that end covered.

As strange as it may sound, the thing that keeps me coming back are the beverages.  At the register, you’ll see a row of bottles showcasing all kinds of sodapops and caffeinated syrupy refreshments that you’ve never heard of.  In the past, I’ve stuck to the cider, but this time, I went with the sharp Sarsparilla.

You should look cool in front of all your friends and take them to eat there this weekend.
