SPECIAL GUEST.

Beginning this Saturday night and through April 4, Kaws comes to Los Angeles with his first solo exhibition at Honor Fraser.  It’s kind of a big deal.

About as big as the 4ft Kaws Companion that came in this morning.

ON A SUNDAY.

Sundays at The Hundreds Headquarters.  Hugo was in to work on Corgishoe.. tattooing a skull nestled right into Corgi’s armpit.  Now I don’t know if you’ve ever gotten a tat, or had any that go remotely near that area of the body, but it feels like Satan is sticking you with a Crocodile Dundee knife. Over and over. Slowly.

But Corgi takes it like a champ.  Ticklish, maybe.

LOOK WHO’S BACK.

DJ Mike B is back.. from his European tour.  I don’t even know all the countries he swept through, but I do know he was in Stockholm, Sweden to DJ Caliroots‘ 5 Year Anniversary.  And he did remark that The Hundreds has a massive following in Norway. Nice to know.

Mike is also back with Drive-By Bangers 2, our third official mixtape under his mastery.  If you ever had the chance to get, or listen to, the first Drive-By Bangers that dropped 3 years ago, then you know how widely-anticipated this next masterpiece has been. All of the finest West Coast rap from decades past.

Plus, even more drops this time around, including Bun B, Ice-T, Ibn Jasper, Jimmy Gorecki, Joe Hahn, plus all The Hundreds regulars you love to hate.  Here’s a preview from my morning commute:

For a limited time only, download DRIVE-BY BANGERS 2 HERE !

And for an even MORE limited time, for those who missed it the first go-around, download DRIVE-BY BANGERS 1 HERE !

WEATHERING THE STORM.

We just got back from lunch with Andres and Dee, founders of Five Four.

Nice touch.

Well, Five Four made headlines this past week, literally. The Wall Street Journal chronicled the menswear line’s navigation through the murky economy.  In case you haven’t heard, we’re in a recession here in the States world, and fashion retail is getting the brunt of it.  When an age-old institution department store like Macy’s lays off most of its buyers, then that leaves Five Four without the connect. And that trickles down to you, the consumer.  And so on.

So in light of the economic downturn, we held a recession-style lunch meeting, around the corner at King Taco.

On the menu.. al pastor sopes, carne asade nachos, and business strategies to get us through the next year.  Running an apparel brand is creative and a passion project, but it is also still a business, in many ways just like any other business, which is why most don’t survive the game.  Especially in the current economic climate.

On the Five Four blog, Andres does a regular shoes/socks rundown of some notable personalities.  Check it out HERE.

BREAKTIME.

I was passing by the window and spotted everyone’s favorite emcee Nate (aka Nathan Nice) posted up across the street on a break. And then…

WORKED UP.

Does anyone else get to work in the morning, check email, make some phone calls, look up and see this going on in your doorway? Is that normal?

Just checking.

BUILD.

Collaborative projects are a dime a dozen these days, and for the majority of them, the magic is all but gone. But whenever we embark on a collaboration, it’s always with good friends, a logical process that naturally pieces together.  It’s always centered on a project that we all believe in, design that we can stand behind, and are excited to work on together. This also means that it’s a gradual process, one that can take months and even years to resolve.

We’ve been in talks with Andy, Jubal, and professional skateboarder Paul “P-Rod” Rodriguez from Primitive for some time now, discussing a much-anticipated collaboration between brands. The guys stopped by the headquarters this afternoon to bang out some more details and foundational issues before I embark on the first loose sketches. I’d like to give you a window on some of that private process…
