PICKUP LINE.

#

Giant Robot hosted an in-person signing with David Choe tonight at GR2.  The occasion was marked by the release of Dave’s first wood figure, “CHOE GAL,” which is limited to 1,000 pieces.  Plus, he just did the Obama cover for the new Giant Robot magazine.

Dave has a lot of female fans who really like him a lot as a friend.

Words of wisdom.

Martin and Eric of Giant Robot were pleasantly surprised with the line.

This guy directed House Party and so he wins.

Off to eat curry.

TOMORROW.

For all you last-minute shoppers (remember: Gift Cards!).  On Wednesday, December 24th, Christmas Eve, both THLA and THSF will close early.  We will be open at 10am and close at 4pm to give our staff time to spend with the families who disowned them long ago.

RAW TOONAGE.

Guess what I got?

And to prove my undying love for this camera, I took it to Disneyland yesterday in the rain.  Keep in mind, almost all these photos (and video) were focused/shot in the dark, although the ISO was pushed to 6400 on a 15/2.8 fisheye.  Only complaint? As far as I can tell, no auto-focus with the live viewfinder or video.. but it’s a small price to pay for this:

I guess, at some point, Disneyland became less about animatronics, and more about blacklights and fluorescents?  That, and forcing summer blockbusters into our childhood memories. Keep Johnny Depp off my Pirates ride, and the Submarine.. they ditched the mermaids for digitalized fish!?

BUN B FOR THE HUNDREDS

#, #, #

The Hundreds proudly presents the The Hundreds x Bun B collaboration t-shirt.

There are only 150 t-shirts for sale, exclusively at PREMIUM GOODS in Houston, Texas starting THIS SATURDAY MORNING, December 27, 2008.

And who better to paint the picture on what this shirt is all about, then Bun himself.. Introducing guest blogger Mr. B:

_________________________________________

“Hello out there! This is Bun B transmitting live from Houston. I know we have the exclusive release of the Bun B x The Hundreds tee shirt this Saturday only at Premium Goods in Houston, so for those who choose to come to town, I thought I’d show a few of the local landmarks here…

First up is the inspiration for the tee, the Astrodome, former home of  the Oilers and the Astros.”

“Next Stop.  Here I am at Screwed Up Records and Tapes, where DJ Screw held shop.  For those who don’t know, DJ Screw is a Houston HipHop legend. He helped to revolutionize the scene and expand it across the world. The shop still sells enough of his OLD mixtapes to people from all over to keep it open almost a decade after his passing.”

“Moving on… Here I am at King’s Best Market, which is basically a flea market in the hood. It’s the equivalent of the Slauson Swap Meet in LA or Canal St in NYC. Where else can you get jewelry, TVs, furniture, baby clothes, stereo equipment, hot wings, insurance, bicycles, velvet paintings and a fish tank under one roof? Only in America, folks….”

“Lunchtime!  This is Frenchy’s, a Houston staple and all-around great grub spot.  Some here may argue that Timmy Chan’s is better, but it’s really quality versus quantity. Timmy’s wings are bigger and cheaper but Frenchy’s is better seasoned, almost always just out the fire. I’ve burned myself several times being too anxious… proceed with caution!”

“Last stop is Premium Goods, which is where I’ll be this Saturday from 10am-12noon for the release of the super tight tee I’m rocking!  Supplies are VERY limited so get there early! I’ll be signing each tee purchased personally if that ups the ante for any of you guys out there! See you there, and thanks Ben and Bobby! Peace!”

BEST OF THE BEST 2008: CLOTHING

At the end of the day, we do run a clothing company here. And if we’re consumed with anything, it is fashion and apparel. Some of us sit on Style.com, others take cues from the Slauson Swap Meet. Regardless, here are our favorite clothing brands, designers, labels, and other non-The Hundreds names of 2008.

BOBBY (ME): Acapulco Gold

I can’t lie. Outside of The Hundreds, the only labels I rock are Dickies or Converse. But that doesn’t mean I don’t pore over good fashion, from Vivienne Westwood to Hysteric Glamour to Yohji Yamamoto. Believe it or not, I’m really not too aware of what’s going on in the streetwear universe, I keep it virutally blog-free around here.

But I have become a fan of New York-based brand Acapulco Gold. There is an importance in staying consistent, and committed, to branding structure and aesthetic. Acapulco Gold has been there and done that. Other brands ride a hype-fueled rollercoaster, one-hit wonders capitalize on an easy t-shirt graphic, while many aimlessly pinball from one trend to the next. But AG stays true to a finely-tuned art direction, perpetually putting out solid product with seemingly hand-crafted details and a re-focus on excellent design. A very classical sportswear approach with a tasteful NY tweak from piece to piece, it’s been inspiring to watch this brand steadily, quietly, climb its way to the top.

Runners-Up (for one reason or another): J.Crew’s Madewell, the “return” of Fucking Awesome, De+ergen+, Nom De Guerre, Subcrew, H&M x Comme des Garcons, Maiden Noir, Supreme, Play Cloths.

SCOTTY ILL: Manik

“For those of you who don’t know, Manik is a skateboard company headquartered in Seattle, WA. Manik has all the attributes of a brand who will be a force to reckon with in the years to come. From the creative direction, dedication to progression in skateboarding, team, employees, and product, Manik is my favorite brand.”

TONY: Ed Hardy

“Shout out to my boy Christian Audicraze.”

SWITCH: Plain Gravy

“With tees that have caused hip hop moguls to question who they are, to Georgia O’Keeffe-like designs, PG continues to stir-up controversy and push the limits season after season.”

ALEX: Number (N)ine (still)

“They were the first brand to do an American work-and-hunting-wear inspired season (besides the actual workwear companies that have been doing it for 50+ years).”

ON A BENDER.

#

Closing time on Rosewood Ave.

Don’t forget.  The Hundreds x Forum snowboards, and The Hundreds x Special Blend snowboard outerwear, are all at THLA, THSF, and right here in our Online Shop (Limited Edition).

And it’s about time.  The Hundreds Gift Cards are currently available at both The Hundreds Los Angeles and The Hundreds San Francisco.

The clean sweep.

No one does a The Hundreds Johnson Mid like Lil’ Mike.

After over 3 years of lugging around my third eye, through worldwide travels, skate runs, 70 mph chasing Deloreans down the 10 freeway, I finally dropped it right here at THLA.  Go figure.  The fish took a beating, now it’s got the lazy eye.

Eh.  Still operative.

Wrap it up. With the Alice in Wonderland remix.

BEST OF THE BEST 2008 : ATHLETES / SPORTS EVENTS

We couldn’t ignore the jocko side of TH. Here are our favorite Athletes and/or Sports Events of 2008:
____________________________________________________

BOBBY (ME): Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le

Arguably the best Mixed Martial Arts fight of the year, and my personal favorite. Shamrock’s a legend, and to watch the monument get chipped away by the Vietnamese pitbull was more than awe-inspiring. It’s insane that even blocking Le’s brutal sidekicks can leave you with a shattered arm.

BEN: Kobe Bryant

“I watched the best player in basketball have the best year in his career in 2008. I hope he can do it again.. And again.. And again.. And again.”

DOUBLE TAKE.

#, #

Our silkscreen printers, Stix, hosted their annual Christmas party in the Valley this week.  I sat in over 2 hours of traffic on the rain-slicked 101 to get there, so things were wrapping up on arrival.

Bubba’s a walking billboard.

Jay, Big Bruce, Jon Hundreds.

Something looks off. The hair?

Kenny knows a girl?

There was a Neil Young cover singer, but dude wouldn’t play “Unknown Legend” for me.  Booo tomatoes.

Things unraveled quickly. I’ll stop the coverage there.

The other day, we dropped in on The Attic in Buena Park to say hello to Jimmy and Derek.  They treated us to this gourmet beer/burger spot down the street called Portillo’s.  Derek was on one with the blog tip.  He was nuking everything around him with his Rebel.  The world’s first alcoholic beverage paparazzo.

You have chosen.. wisely.

I’m still recovering from this.

BEST OF THE BEST 2008 : GADGET

What, with all the iPodding and XBoxing, you’d figure we’d lean towards music or video games to quench our technological needs. But Blackberry (the archaic prototype for the Star Trek communicator device), reigns supreme here in L.A. As the perfect hipster accessory, whether for the absorbed socialite or the serious business”that“guy, the Blackberry translates across all demos with a resounding “I’m IMPORTANT!

But I do have a bone to pick. After months of anticipation for the messiah Blackberry that promised unimaginable riches, was anyone as unimpressed with the Storm as me? Does anyone else agree that the touch-screen song-and-dance is one technological innovation we’d like to give back? I mean, was there really that big of a problem with buttons? I kinda liked buttons! And stupid me, stuck on Verizon with a camera-less international Blackberry,.. I beg of you Mr. Thick-Framed Glasses guy, give us the Blackberry Bold!

Here are The Hundreds’ top gadgets of 2008.

BOBBY (ME): Canon EOS 5D Mark II

21.1 Megapixels. Takes photographs the size of small nations. Live view shooting.. Full-frame for my 15mm fisheye lens (Finally). But of course, the kicker, shoots HD videos. The second best thing to having a RED.. Now if I could only get off this Samy’s waiting list. Trust me, you will know the day I get it.
