HOLIDAZED.

#

It’s a long holiday weekend here in the States, so I’m gonna brave the rain and step outside for a bit. (Probably start off by watching the new Indiana Jones like 7 times). In the meantime, do yourself a favor and check out our new sidebar blogs that are being constantly updated with all sorts of visual-candy, mindless drivel.

Switch keeps all your product news moving on The Feed, including some heavy exclusives like a look at our boy Maxx’s Bearbrick for Japan’s Zac Pac.

The Photo BooTH is your look into THLA’s happenings here on Rosewood Ave.  (What about THSF?  Stay tuned).

Ah yes.  There’s Neek.  Life in Las Vegas is more than neon signs, showgirls, and debauchery.  Apparently, it’s all about fixed-gear bikes, strip malls, and.. debauchery.

One of our newest sidebar blogs, Video Daze, reflects our growing fascination with 10-second windows into bizarre realities.  I’m still not laughing at the American Gladiator chick.

Sure, ynoT? This is Tony’s blog from in and around The Hundreds San Francisco.  This is what I’ve learned today.  Skateboards, Morrissey, high heels, beer.  Thanks Tony.

Yasi’s been going at it with her advice column.  Ask Yasi anything your heart desires.  And then she’ll track you down on Myspace and really lace into you.  Case in point.

This month on GIVE, we are referring you over to weSPARK, a commendable organization that provides a community for cancer patients, their families and friends.  Please check it out, and if you’re up for it, donate.

Oh, yeah, and this is my blog.  Hi.

WACKY.

Darcy and Jay (5&A Dime) drove up from San Diego through rain, ice storms, a cyclone, locusts, overturned trains, and that fire-raining thing from Shinobi, to get up here to L.A. this afternoon. Then a furry creature attacked Jay’s upper lip.  Bad day.

Have you stopped by 5&A Dime lately?  Debo was there this past weekend giving away a bike.

No, that wasn’t a typo.  DEBO WAS THERE THIS WEEKEND GIVING AWAY A BIKE.

Read the 5&A Dime blog.

Eric Nakamura. Giant Robot.

I caught up with Eric on his turf this afternoon.. Over on Sawtelle in West Los Angeles, home to Giant Robot, Giant Robot 2 (GR2), and his restaurant, GR/Eats. This community has been home to generations of Japanese-Americans that started building here after leaving the internment camps during World War II. To this day, some shops are still owned by the same families that settled here, but after Eric moved on the block years ago, this street went super hip. Now, home to all sorts of cool Asian restaurants, boutiques, galleries, even a Pinkberry.

Anyways, as I was saying, Eric and I got lunch at GR/Eats. I got the tilapia. Tilapia is apparently the fish with the least amount of mercury in it. Not only that, but it’s cheap and delicious.

Very low chance of dying from poisoning, and easy on the wallet. Score.

This is the original Giant Robot store. I started reading GR as a teenager, the magazine pretty much introduced me to names like Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Takashi Murakami, and David Choe. And I read the music reviews religiously.

When Eric (with the help of his dad) put the first Giant Robot store together on Sawtelle, it was truly ahead of its time. Sure, nowadays, it’s all about Asian fetish this-and-that, limited action figures, obscure art and comic books.. But back then, this was pretty much the only stateside retailer doing anything remotely close to all that.

Now, Giant Robot has 2 stores and an eatery here in L.A., a shop in San Francisco, and another in New York. Not too shabby for a store that doesn’t sell any robots, let alone giant ones.

GR2 currently has a show going on entitled “Killing Time,” and pairs the unlikely duo of Albert Reyes and Matt Furie.

Taken from the GR2 site: “Matt Furie is an Ohio-born, San Francisco-based artist whose richly detailed and hyper colored illustrations and paintings reflect the creative cross breeding of The Neverending Story, unrestrained imagination of The Muppet Show, and humor of ALF. His corruption by popular culture is further complicated-or perhaps enriched-by the energy of BMX culture and anarchy of street art.”

“Albert Reyes is a Los Angeles-based San Francisco Art Institute graduate who has developed a style equally influenced by graffiti, comics, and fine art. Among other media, he draws and prints on the inside covers of old books and mixes traditional Mexican imagery, popular culture icons, and political suggestion. He was the cover artist and main interview in Giant Robot 52.”

The show is up ’til June 18, so stop by GR2 to check it out.

Baron Davis used to come around Rosewood when The Store was still our studio. We thought that was pretty cool of him, especially back when we were just toolin’ around with our rinky-dink operation. But you know what’s even cooler? The fact that THIS IS AS CLOSE AS WE’LL EVER GET TO TOUCHING JESSICA ALBA.

Baron and recent-newlywed Cash Warren were honored with the humanitarian award for producing the documentary Made in America about gang violence in L.A, last night at the Celebration of Mentoring Awards and Gala.

BD and Cash also run IBeatYou.com (which our homey Jordan also has a hand in). I’m sure you’ve heard about this social-networking-by-way-of-competition website over the past few weeks, especially because of Jessica Hundreds’ contribution:

Last summer it was all about the Korean-style frozen yogurt. This year, it’s all about Korean-style fried chicken. Next year, Korean-style Korean food?

Ben and I had lunch with Chad (Foreign Family).

He schooled us on growing up in L.A.’s Koreatown, its turbulent relationship with gangs and the next generation of K-town ganglife that’s been settling back into the streets. Race wars, old-school ringleaders getting out of jail, and crazier, even more ruthless kids.

And then we talked for 15 minutes about his hair. Chad’s crazier, even more ruthless hair.

Back upstairs to the Foreign Family Design House, where Chad and Mr.44 run their daily ops, not only directing their apparel brand but taking on outside work for clients.

Mr.44′s out in Tokyo for Design Festa. So, of course, I had to snoop.

Chad can get creative also.

That’s an ugly dog.

I like this one: “The artist is nothing without the gift. But the gift is nothing without work.” And the work is nothing without the artist. What?

But this one’s better.

CHAT.

I’m watching this PBS documentary about the web’s pervasive impression on our youth, in terms of how it shapes world views, social relationships, culture, and communication. Anyways, this was an interesting point, one that I can hardly contend:

The internet has created the biggest generation gap since the advent of rock and roll.

Food for thought.

SEXISM VS. RACISM

Often noted for his tongue-in-cheek, sardonic illustrations that can pack quite the punch in the pop-culture and sociopolitical arena, graphic artist Kenyon B just sent me this new pen drawing on cardboard.
Pretty funny.
