LONG LOST.

Raad (Digital Gravel) moved to Dubai a couple years ago, and apparently from his outfit, that was the last time he acquired anything streetwear-related. It’s as if he’s been cryogenically frozen the past couple years, like Walt Disney or Brendan Fraser in Encino Man except instead of being encased in ice, he’s been lounging on sand dunes in flip-flops and coconut oil.  I hate him and you should too.

One of the best shwag boxes I’ve gotten.. thanks to Joshy (Rebel 8) for sending me a complimentary Mike Giant limited-edition (100 pieces!) flash set.  I’m gonna get that entire alphabet as-is on my back.

SQUINT.

So this one time, my friend Zach and I were onstage shooting photos at a Helmet show. It was the dead of summer and to compound the stifling heat, the club was sardine’d to the seams. Kinda like one of those “it was so hot, the walls were sweating” situations. The club owners decided it’d be a brilliant idea to bring in some industrial fans and point them towards the stage at the band. That way, Helmet could continue being TOTALLY AWESOME!! without fear of dehydration / heat stroke / exhaustion / death.

EXPOSED.

Scotty was in Orlando this past week for SURF EXPO. That’s right folks, tradeshow season is already here, so Mr. iLL’s out on the road for the next month and a half with salesman samples in tow. Surf Expo is one of the country’s largest skate and surf retailer exhibitions with 2,500 booths including brands like Krew, LRG, and RVCA showing. Here are some more friendly faces from the past week.

Speakin’ of Krew/Supra, Ashley and Angel ran through. (P.S. Stop by Angel and Chad Muska’s new store Factory 413 on Fairfax!)

Scotty also got some great footy of the skate competition. Here are 2 clips of Adam Dyet slaughtering.

Anyways, everytime I tried to talk to Scotty, he was oddly distracted and blabbed in incoherent spurts. I assumed he was hard at work, but it wasn’t until he sent me back the photos that I figured out what was going on.

Apparently this was the view from The Hundreds booth at all times of the day. Deva.

ACCESS DENIED.

I swung by Dom’s this afternoon to steal a pair of sneakers and lo and behold, import supermodel Christine Mendoza was posting up… in person, on Dom’s desktop wallpaper, everywhere.

Believe it or not, shot by Michael Rappaport.

Funnily enough, Christine couldn’t remember the password to get into her own website.
So I gave her yours. Pervert.

FLORI DUH.

The Scotty train’s moved onto Orlando, Florida, where he dropped in on Francis and Tommy, who collectively run 2 of the city’s top accounts: Beta and Covert.

francisandtommy.jpg

Beta runs on the more “street” end of things, stocking a wide selection of sneakers, tees and other premium apparel. Oh and you’ll find The Hundreds here.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Gallery 1988 on Melrose Ave. is hosting Under the Influence, an entire gallery of tribute artwork dedicated to Stan Lee. You know. The guy who co-created the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Spiderman.. or perhaps you know him as the guy who makes bizarre cameos in each of those movie adaptations. Or Mallrats.. The show closes February 1st, take a looksee.

BLUNDER YEARS.

We ate lunch directly across from Fred Savage about an hour ago. He was with his toddler, feeding the midget raw broccoli and apple juice and completely oblivious to the entire world of thirtysomething soccer moms watching him out of the corner of their eye. It’s crazy how we grew up watching him grow up, as if we were actually there when he was chasing Winnie, getting beatdown by Wayne, .. his grumpy ’70s dad that never looks away from the TV set. The Wonder Years.

It goes the same for Alex, aka the Artist formerly known as The Super Intern. We’ve watched this guy elongate to the towering lurch that he is. Still as cool as the first day the 16-year-old walked right up to our office by himself and told us his favorite clothing line was Number (N)ine.

UPDATE YASI.

Yasi’s still looking for a good question to respond to for her next ASK YASI. Email askyasi@thehundreds.com your questions, or else she’ll continue to hound reality TV personalities. And that’s a bad thing. I think.

LOOKING GLASS.

I just came across this photo from a few years back. I shot this myself (Yes, it was complicated. No, I didn’t hold the camera in my teeth) for the Untitled book that Steven Vogel worked on. The image was meant for my essay on Screenwear,” as I cheekily coined it. It was during the period where the secret society of “streetwear” and the internet were really coming to a head, and the entire industry and subsequent consumer demographic were raising hell over webstores, news dotcoms, and online blog hype. Seems kinda funny and trite now, considering how symbiotic the relationship has become, and how homogeneous streetwear is today in the online realm. Hmph.

computerfingers.jpg

Anyways, the photo was interesting because all of the elements depict where my life was at on that exact moment, years ago. We were still so green as a brand and business that I was running all our designs off a 4-year-old PC brick. I was literally shivering in my poorly insulated studio apartment, so I had to work late nights with those surplus-store Rocky gloves on, also resulting in a nasty cold that even prescription pills couldn’t fend. Dinner? A box of Reese’s Pieces. I used that fabric swatch on the right to base some early snap-backs off of; the swatch on the left was never seen from again. Blah blah, the point being, that to all the kids who email me everyday inquiring as to how to start a clothing company, I guess it starts off something like this.

If your fingertips are frostbitten, you’re on the right track.
