Ben and Scotty are over on the East Coast and out of the studio, which not only means that I can sell all their furniture on Ebay, but that we have coverage of some of our top accounts on the other side of the country. Their first stop was at WTHN in Philadelphia, which is run by the homey Mason. Prime boutique stocking the cream-of-the-crop: Rogue Status, Red Tops, and Ssur amongst others.

And I always thought Philadelphia was all about Rocky, Fresh Prince, and cheesesteaks. Oh and Love Park. And the Roots. And a riveting Academy Award-winning film chronicling the dramatic saga of a dying lawyer with AIDS who takes on his dismissal from a conservative law firm.

Steph and The Chundreds drinking on the job.

Shareef (Phli / Commonground) straight outta Chicago.

The only hoody that’s qualified as an urban legend: The multi-colored Paisley, with each paisley dyed individually. This guy started the process when he was 9 years old and now he’s 34.

Somewhere, the old man is snoring.

The Hundreds x New Era “Black Adam” fitted dropped today at the Store. Some of the most loyal were here since the wee hours of the morning, and most likely returned home with a fresh 59/50 and an extra large pneumonia.

This guy got fired from his job at Best Buy this morning to be here. I’m not saying that’s the best life decision, but at least he’ll have the coolest hat in the unemployment line.

First-timers.

Of course Noelle is here. He’s related to half the line! And speaking of hats…that’s from the first run of the “Team” snap-back that we dropped 3 years ago. Mint condition (except for the fact hat it’s soaked in acid rain).

Swoshmn is already one step ahead of the trends. Introducing the all-over-print rain-streaked TH hoody.

Round and round we go. This guy waited an hour in line, then jumped back in for a second ride.

White girls are the new Asian males.

Jae’s the homey.

This kid’s supposed to be in a midterm. Not as bad as Fired Guy, but he’s a definite contender for Questionable Decisionmaker of the Day.

This Geneva native walked up to me and gave me the Swiss Inquisiton. He lives up the street and was completely perplexed by what was going on (Aren’t we all?). After grilling my brains into tiny bits and pieces, he turned around, and stood in line for an hour to get a hat. The Hundreds is huge in Switzerland.

I got into an argument with Carlos 2 years ago on a messageboard, but this was the first time I’ve ever met him in person. One of the most knowledgable cats on Angeleno history and the street/sneaker culture that I’ve ever met. And he’s not even in the industry. He did drop off some tees he made for his company: The South Central Los Angeles Fire Department.

Classic.

Switch and Tony hash up another round of S-K-A-T-E on a typical afternoon. Just for the record, Switch threw down some fat frontside half-cab flips, but Tony pulled off inside heelflip varials and backside heels like they were goin’ out of style. It came down to S-K-A-T, but Switch walked away with the E.

In the ’80s it was surf apparel, in the ’90s it was skate and urban/hip-hop clothing. Now it’s just all clumped together as “streetwear,” but let’s be honest here. It’s the same t-shirts, hoodies, jeans, and baseball caps. The industry’s following the same trend cycle in the youth fashion marketplace as it has for the past 2 decades. A spawn of rogue indie upstarts kick things off, end up influencing the corporate pirates who buy in, as the indies subsequently sell out. Around this time of the phenomenon, the tradeshows get flooded, stores and labels multiply, and the treasure chest is bottomless.
Then, after a few years, sales plateau, tradeshows deflate, and the trends blow out. Rinse. Repeat.
More than a decade ago, the skateboarding industry was experiencing a very similar evolutionary process as ours is today. Since the skate biz was comprised almost entirely of free-spirited independents at the time, when the X Games blew up the spot by the mid-’90s, it was an overnight Gold Rush to go huge. Again, parallel to our (and our peers’) situation today, small companies were suddenly forced to grow up, as the pirates moved in and fellow competitors chased dollar signs. Many caught the wave, others fought it, but almost all were forced to deal with the realities of surfacing in the mainstream in their own way.
Since the web wasn’t so worldwide at the time, and the mainsream media wasn’t so boardsports-friendly, skate companies relied heavily on advertisements in print publications to showcase their lifestyle, ideology, and most importantly, their voice. Switch brought over his entire collection of Thrasher skateboarding magazines from the mid-90s, and I just had to share some of the best ads. They’re from Fuct and Consolidated, who were both known for using their adspace as a conduit for their stark opinions on what was going on in the business around them. Both brands are still very much alive and well today, and still staying true, telling it like it is, and keeping it real with their customers. All while maintaining their sense of humor, and not taking themselves too seriously. Gotta respect that.
Now, let’s play “Spot the similarities.”

Marlon (Sneaktip) has been around Fairfax quite a bit lately… and not just on our 13th Witness collab tee as the masked gunman.

NA (Supreme LA) hates us. “Cornballs!”
