So Jeff Soto’s show opened at Kinsey’s BLK/MRKT gallery this weekend. The turnout was solid (as usual) and almost every single piece got snatched.

The eye of the hurricane: Jeff scrawls while ladies and fanboys swoon.

NICKEL AND DIMED.

I’m down at 5&A Dime in San Diego right now, and so is Aly (Fiberops). And so is the TBG hoody on Aly’s back. Big ups to Adrian for keepin’ it clever.

img_8941.jpg

I’m completely surrounded by boxes in here. It’s like a homeless-person condominium. Or like a Q-bert game. Except I’m the orange horn-snout monster guy…

img_8921.jpg

img_8923.jpg

and Jay is the purple coil-snake bouncing-guy.
Blog for blog.

img_8928.jpg

Actually, the boxes are filled with fresh product just-in from 3sixteen, Lovewright, and of course.. The Hundreds.

img_8936.jpg

Everyone loves Bearbricks. I am infatuated with Jeremy Fish’s “turtle camper.” Hey, whatever floats your boat. Or RV. RVs don’t float, by the way.

img_8931.jpg

Hey, just to let you know, 5&A Dime’s having a warehouse sale. I’m sure there will be plenty more cardboard boxes there for you to jump on, Mr. COIL SNAKE GUY.

Don’t forget that this store extends beyond these white walls. 5&A Dime online-shop is live.

GOOD FENCES

Considering how hectic things have gotten, I’m actually pretty embarassed to say that it’s been quite a while since I’ve visited our affable next-door neighbor, Salvador Lucas Barbier aka SLB.

img_8920.jpg

This Levi’s jacket is plenty of bang for the buck. It costs $100, but comes with about 523 bang. With extra bang sewed into the pockets.

img_8909.jpg

A seamless range of tees, from Rebel8 to Sailor Jerry, Thrasher to SLB’s in-house brand. Best T-shirt In The Store award goes unquestionably to the Lovewright x Fiberops double-label. As if that weren’t enough, you can’t even see the high-density print job running down the legs! Game over.

img_8905.jpg

Irons is in. Both literally and figuratively.

img_8906.jpg

…as are the SLB x The Year Of exclusive collab denim.

img_8904.jpg

Take a look around. Lemme know if you need any help.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING PLAID.

When deciding how to approach our Holiday season of The Hundreds Public Label, we didn’t have to look far. With our t-shirt graphics under The Hundreds Collection, we have always recalled on our life experiences, much of that stemming from our adolescent years growing up amidst Southern California subculture.

For some reason, in the ’90s, it was near-impossible to escape plaid, whether in the form of flannel, button-up, or lumberjack. Especially if you were aware of music-conscious style and fashion. As the “grunge” industry shot off the metal and punk scene, it also borrowed on the ubiquitous long-sleeve flannel button-up. Who can forget the influential style code that Kurt Cobain delineated for all the angry, displaced, suburban youth?

Across the way, L.A. gangsta rap also dabbled with flannelism…

Taking cues from the workwear-inspired ‘hood uniform-of-choice, West Coast rap artists were always fresh-pressed in plaid. Which, in turn, just reinforced flannel and lumberjacks as a staple amongst a spectrum of Cali culture. From skateboarders to surfers, taggers to punkers. Ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles may have been divergent amongst crews, but oddly enough during this decade, the flannel acted as a common denominator for all sets of youth.

It does seem strange that what was once so latent, has fallen by the wayside. Well,.. I guess some of us haven’t forgotten.

….a red-and-black lumberjack.. with a Smartcar to match?

TIME TO GO WITH PLAN B

When I was in high school, I would run home everyday (because the jocks were throwing rocks at my head and girls would point and laugh at my bloody skull) but also because I would watch Plan B’s “Questionable” video religiously while inhaling Oreos, Shark Bites, and Handi-Snacks. Together. With a purple Squeezit.

And then, when “Virtual Reality” came out, I had another excuse to burn through my VCR. It’s safe to say that Plan B is one of the most influential names in skateboarding, and so it only makes sense that eS Footwear teamed up with them to produce Plan B’s first-ever collabo shoe. They picked PJ Ladd’s pro model, only made less than 1,000 pairs, and also made limited New Eras and skateboards to fill it out. Plan B still rules, I still eat junk food, and girls still laugh at me.

Out this month…

HEADS UP

Diz Gibran and Nick Tershay (Diamond) haven’t been blogged for a minute. But you’ll be happy to know that not much has changed (still the same sunny disposition on life, still the same impeccable taste in attire). Except for the fact that the Diamond store is opening on Fairfax. Wait, huh?! Yeah, that’s right, I said it, and I’ll say it again: DIAMOND STORE ON FAIRFAX. I’ll even let you know it’s opening sooner than you’d think. It’s either that, or it’s not gonna open at all. Something like that. Uhh..yeah. Moving on…

Not an hour went by today without someone walking into the studio and mentioning Mega (Huf)’s new tattoos (as spotted on Keith’s Honeyee blog). Ray should get them also, except with “Crazy” on his right-forearm instead.

It’s been a long Monday. Thankfully, Tony Arcabascio (formerly of Alife) sent me a fresh copy of his new book, NOW YOU KNOW to kick back with. Subtitled A “HOW TO” BOOK FOR THE STREET SMART, the book is actually a 3-year culmination of Tony’s “The Alife How To” columns in Arkitip magazine.

img_8844.jpg

Tony says, “It’s just a couple of things the people who ‘know,’ may not know (if you know what I mean)…”

With chapters like “HOW TO TORCH A CAR,” “HOW TO TALK BEHIND SOMEONE’S BACK, IN FRONT OF THEM” and “HOW TO KEEP YOUR JOB” (which anyone who works in coolguy retail must read),.. how could you go wrong?

img_8851.jpg

Quit reading over my shoulder. Go get your own book, leech.

img_8853.jpg

I looked up and thought I saw Jo from ROGUE STATUS on TV… wait a minute,…!

img_8855.jpg

On blast!

[p.s. What's this I hear about the new The Hundreds Public Label hitting certain boutiques this week? Grey One, 5&A Dime, and Versus..? Stay tuned...]
